About MineSpecs

MineSpecs is a free Minecraft companion: calculators, a seed map, recipes and build guides, a catalogue of mods, shaders, resource packs and data packs, a skin gallery, a blog and a few browser games. There are no accounts and nothing to sign up for.

Who runs it

The site is run as MineSpecs, an unofficial fan project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Mojang Studios or Microsoft. “Minecraft” is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB.

You can reach the operator on Discord; the contact page says what to include.

How we check our work

What stands behind the numbers and files on this site, and nothing more:

One set of formulas behind every calculator

The calculators don’t each carry their own maths: they call one shared set of formulas, so the same rule gives the same answer on every page. The next experience level, for example, costs 2 × your level + 7 points below level 16, 5 × level − 38 from 16 to 30, and 9 × level − 158 from 31 on — so going from level 30 to 31 takes 112 points.

Enchanting odds are simulated with the game's own procedure

The enchanting tool runs a port of the game’s enchanting-table procedure — the level offered in each slot, the weighted pick of an enchantment, and the rolls for extra ones — 30,000 times per slot from a fixed seed, and counts what comes up. The rules are the game’s; the percentages are the share of those simulated rolls, so they are reproducible and close to the true odds rather than exact.

Files are hosted only under a licence that allows it

We put a mod, shader or pack on our own servers only when the licence its author gives it — on Modrinth, or in the licence file shipped with it — is one that permits redistribution. When it isn’t, the download button goes to the author’s own page instead. We also read the licence and notice files inside each hosted file, and any that add terms of their own — for example, keeping the artwork “all rights reserved” — are flagged for a person to review. 354 of the 354 mod files we host are byte-for-byte the same as the author’s release on Modrinth, matched by their SHA-1 checksum. If you find a file that breaks this rule, tell us and it comes down.

Every community skin is reviewed by hand

Skins sent in by visitors wait in a queue until a moderator approves them; nothing goes into the gallery automatically. Only the image data is kept from each file, and submissions nobody has reviewed are deleted after 30 days.

Leaderboards refuse impossible scores

Each game has a score ceiling, worked out from its scoring rules where they set one. The server refuses scores above it and hides any stored entry above it, and names are filtered every time they’re shown.

Corrections

If a number, a version, a recipe or a licence on MineSpecs is wrong, please tell us which page and what you expected. We check the report against the game or the original source, and when it holds up we correct the page itself rather than leave the error in place.
