Wilderness Bound is Mojang’s third game drop of 2026, released on September 15, 2026 for both editions (Java 26.3, Bedrock 26.50). Its centrepiece is the Dappled Forest, a new forest biome found near cold biomes, filled with red, orange and yellow poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms and Red Shrubs. There are no new mobs; its animals are sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes, using their cold variants where they have one.

Abandoned Camps generate in 18 biomes, each with its own variant. Straw Beds let you sleep through the night without setting your spawn point, and break after one use. Cushions are seats in 16 colours, crafted from wool slabs, and every colour of wool and concrete now has stairs and slabs. Explorer maps became items of their own, with new ones that lead to camps and other structures.

At Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, Mojang gave a first look at the next game drop: ice caves, a new cave biome with icicles on the ceiling and glowing ice crystals on the floor, and a frozen zombie variant that doesn’t have a name yet. Its hits add a freezing effect, and some of them throw ice balls. Mojang gave no release date.

Mojang also announced the Sift, the first new dimension in over 14 years, coming to Java and Bedrock in 2027. It appears first in Minecraft Dungeons II, which Mojang dated for September 29, 2026. None of this is in a Java build yet: 26.4-snapshot-2 adds no new blocks, items, mobs or biomes over 26.3.

Since 2026, Mojang numbers versions by year. The first part is the year, so every version released in 2026 starts with 26. Next comes the release number, then the patch or hotfix number.

• Java adds a patch as a separate number: 26.1 was followed by 26.1.1 and 26.1.2.
• Bedrock counts up from the release number instead: Wilderness Bound shipped as 26.50, and its hotfixes count up from there (26.51, 26.52 and so on).
• The editions don’t match because they release at different rates: Wilderness Bound is Java 26.3 but Bedrock 26.50.
• Test versions carry the number of the version they lead to: 26.3 was preceded by 26.3-snapshot-1 through 26.3-snapshot-10, then pre-releases (26.3-pre-1) and release candidates (26.3-rc-1).

Mojang announced the change on December 2, 2025 (Minecraft’s new version numbering system). The last version numbered the old way was Java 1.21.11, released on December 9, 2025.

Java Edition has had 103 full releases, from 1.0 on November 17, 2011 to 26.3 on September 15, 2026. Dates are the release times in Mojang’s version manifest, in UTC. Snapshots, pre-releases and the old alpha and beta versions are left out.
