Blockword: the Minecraft word guessing game
Guess the five-letter word in six tries: a Minecraft word, an everyday word, or a mix of both. Every guess turns its letters into ore: diamond for the right spot, gold for the wrong one, stone for not in the word. No daily limit, no sign-up: play word after word and climb the weekly board.
Minecraft or everyday words, half and half
How to play Blockword
- 1Pick a mode. Mix, the default, gives you a Minecraft word or an everyday word, half and half. Minecraft mode has only Minecraft words: blocks, items, mobs, biomes, enchantments and more. General mode has everyday English words. This browser remembers your pick.
- 2Guess a five-letter word. Type any five-letter English word or Minecraft word on your keyboard, or tap the keys, then press Mine it or Enter.
- 3Read the ore under each letter. Diamond ore means the letter is in the right spot. Gold ore means it is in the word, in another spot. Plain stone means it isn't in the word at all.
- 4Mind repeated letters. Each letter is marked as many times as it appears in the answer, no more. Guess EERIE when the word is ELDER and the first E is diamond, the second E and the R are gold, and the last E is stone, because ELDER has only two.
- 5Solve it in six. You have six tries. The pickaxe beside each row shows what a solve there is worth: 60 points on the first try, 50 on the second, down to 10 on the sixth.
- 6Play as many words as you like. There is no daily limit. A word won't come back until you've played most of its list, and skipping a word you've started counts as a loss.
- 7Climb the boards. Each mode has two boards. This week adds up your best 25 words of the week, so skill counts, not hours played; it resets every Monday at 00:00 UTC. Best streak shows your longest run of solved words.
Tips for longer streaks
- Your guesses don't have to be possible answers. Any five-letter English word is allowed, so open with one that tests common letters.
- Gold ore says two things at once: the letter is in the word, and not where you put it. Move it somewhere new on the next guess.
- Stone letters go dark on the keyboard, so you can see at a glance which letters are left.
- In Minecraft mode, think blocks, items, mobs, biomes, enchantments and effects. Plural names, like a pair of boots, count too. In Mix, a tag above the board says which kind of word it is after your first guess.
- Only your best 25 words of the week count on the weekly board, so one miss won't sink your week. It does end your streak: on the last row, go for the likeliest word, not the cleverest.
- Colour-blind? The eye button adds a symbol to every tile and key: ✓ right spot, ↔ wrong spot, ✕ not in the word.
Frequently asked questions
What is Blockword?
Blockword is a free Minecraft word-guessing game. Guess a five-letter word in six tries (a Minecraft word, an everyday word, or a mix of both) and the ore under each letter tells you how close you are. There's no daily limit: play as many words as you like, right in your browser.
What are the three modes?
Minecraft: 212 five-letter Minecraft words, from blocks, items, mobs and biomes to enchantments, effects and structures, all checked by hand. General: 1,619 everyday English words from 12dicts, a public-domain list of common words, with plurals and rude, adult or obscure words taken out. Mix, the default: each word comes from one list or the other, half and half. Pick a mode above the board; this browser remembers it.
Which words can I guess?
In every mode, any five-letter English word from ENABLE, a public-domain word list, and any word from the Minecraft list. So you can test letters freely.
How is the score worked out?
A word solved on the first try scores 60 points, on the second 50, and so on down to 10 on the sixth. A miss scores 0. This week's board adds up each player's best 25 words of the week in that mode, so it rewards skill, not hours played. It starts again every Monday at 00:00 UTC.
How does the streak work?
Each word you solve adds one to your streak in that mode. A miss, or starting a new word before finishing the one you're on, resets it. Every mode has its own streak and its own Best streak board.
What do the ore tiles mean?
Diamond ore: the letter is in the right spot. Gold ore: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else. Stone: the letter isn't in the word. Switch on colour-blind symbols with the eye button for ✓, ↔ and ✕ marks as well.
Do I need an account?
No. The first time you play, you get an anonymous player with a random name, like Silly Seal, and this browser remembers it. You can rename it, up to 16 characters.
Can I play against my friends?
Yes. Make a challenge link with 1, 3 or 5 words, in the mode you pick, and send it to your friends. Everyone plays the same words whenever they like, each player's first try at each word counts, and the standings update by themselves. Challenge scores stay in the challenge.
Can scores be faked?
No. The server picks every word, checks every guess and only shows the word once the round is over, so a score can't be made up in the browser. Solves faster than a person could type are flagged and don't count.
Is Blockword an official Minecraft game?
No. Blockword is a free fan-made game by MineSpecs. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Mojang Studios or Microsoft; 'Minecraft' is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB.
About Blockword
Blockword is a word game from MineSpecs. Its Minecraft words come from Minecraft itself: blocks, items, mobs and biomes that the rest of this site covers, from the crafting recipes to the seed map, plus enchantments, effects and structures. Its everyday words come from 12dicts, a public-domain list of common English words by Alan Beale. When you’ve had your fill of words, try the daily mining puzzle Oredle or the rest of the arcade.
