Dispensers vs Droppers: Every Use Explained
A dispenser uses the item; a dropper just throws it. Every special dispenser interaction, how dropper lifts work, and which farms need which.
A dispenser uses the item you feed it. A dropper just throws it. Every other difference between the two blocks, and every design decision you will ever make with them, falls out of that one line. Put an arrow in a dispenser and it becomes a projectile. Put the same arrow in a dropper and it becomes an item lying on the floor.
They look almost identical, they cost almost nothing, and they are wired the same way. Picking the right one is entirely about whether you want the item used or the item moved.
Crafting and placement
Dropper: seven cobblestone around the edge of the crafting grid with the centre slot left empty, and one redstone dust in the bottom-middle.
Dispenser: the same ring of seven cobblestone, the same redstone dust, but a bow in the centre slot. The bow's durability does not matter — a bow with one hit left crafts an identical dispenser, so use your worn-out ones.
Both blocks face the direction you are looking when you place them, which means they point away from you. To aim one upwards, look up as you place it; to aim down, look down. Placing one the wrong way round is the single most common reason a "broken" circuit isn't broken at all.
What both blocks share
- Nine inventory slots, and a random non-empty slot is picked on every activation. They do not work left to right. Mixed contents give you random output — which is a bug when you didn't want it and a feature when you did.
- They fire on the rising edge of the signal only. A lever flicked on fires the block exactly once. Leaving the lever on does nothing further, and flicking it off does nothing either. Repeated firing needs repeated pulses.
- A short built-in delay sits between the signal arriving and the item coming out. It is only a couple of redstone ticks, but it matters when you are timing a shot against a piston or a door.
- Comparators read them like a chest. Signal strength scales with how full the nine slots are, so you can detect an empty ammo box or a filled one. See comparators explained for how to read the number properly.
- Hoppers load and drain them. A hopper pointing into the block refills it; a hopper underneath pulls items straight back out. That second one catches people out constantly — see the failures section. The full ruleset is in hopper mechanics.
- Quasi-connectivity applies to both. Like pistons, dispensers and droppers in Java also react to power in the block directly above them, but only when something nearby causes a block update. This is why a dispenser sometimes fires when you open a door two blocks away.
Everything a dispenser treats as special
If an item is not on this list, the dispenser ejects it exactly like a dropper would.
Projectiles, fired out of the mouth:
- Arrows, including tipped and spectral arrows. They leave at a fixed speed with a little random spread, they cannot be charged and cannot crit, and tipped arrows keep their potion effect.
- Fire charges, which fly out as a small fireball and ignite whatever they land on.
- Wind charges, with the same knockback burst as a thrown one.
- Snowballs and eggs. Dispensed eggs can still hatch a chick.
- Splash potions and lingering potions.
- Bottles o' enchanting, which burst into XP orbs on impact.
- Firework rockets, launched along the dispenser's facing.
Tools and consumables, used on whatever is in front:
- Flint and steel ignites the block space in front — TNT, a campfire, a candle, a Nether portal frame. It takes durability damage each time and eventually breaks, so keep a spare in another slot.
- Shears shear a sheep standing in front, carve a pumpkin into a carved pumpkin, and harvest a full bee nest or hive for honeycomb.
- Glass bottles fill with honey from a hive that is at full honey level.
- Bone meal is applied to the block in front exactly as if you had right-clicked it yourself.
Fluids, mobs and vehicles:
- Water, lava and powder snow buckets place their contents in the block in front. An empty bucket does the reverse and scoops a source block back into the dispenser.
- Mob buckets — fish, axolotls — release the mob along with its water and leave an empty bucket behind.
- Spawn eggs spawn their mob in front of the dispenser.
- TNT comes out already primed, fuse burning. It is not placed as a block.
- Boats are set down in front. Minecarts are placed if there is a rail there, and dropped as an item if there isn't.
Wearables, equipped onto a player or mob standing in the block in front:
- Helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots.
- Elytra, which takes the chest slot.
- Carved pumpkins and mob heads.
The catch on every one of those: a dispenser only equips into an empty slot. If the target is already wearing something there, the dispenser does not swap it — it gives up and ejects the item on the floor. That is almost always why an armour dispenser looks like it is doing nothing.
Dropper item elevators
A dropper facing into any container — a chest, a barrel, a hopper, another dropper, even a dispenser — transfers the item straight into that container's inventory instead of ejecting it. Stack that behaviour vertically and you get an item lift that works in any dimension, needs no water, and never creates a single item entity.
- 1.Build a vertical column of droppers, each one facing up into the one above it. Look upwards as you place each block.
- 2.Cap the column with a dropper facing into a chest, a hopper, or the machine you are feeding.
- 3.Feed the bottom dropper from a hopper running out of your collection chest.
- 4.Run a repeating pulse to the droppers in the column. A dust line up a staircase of blocks or an observer chain both work — the droppers do not care how the pulse arrives, only that it keeps arriving. Pick a driver from redstone clocks and timers.
The behaviour to understand before you build one: each pulse moves every item up exactly one dropper. So the first item takes as many pulses as there are droppers to reach the top, but once the column is loaded, the top of the lift outputs one item per pulse indefinitely. High latency, perfectly respectable throughput.
Two reasons to reach for this over a water stream: it works in the Nether where water evaporates, and because nothing is ever dropped as an entity, nothing despawns, nothing burns, and nothing adds entity lag to your farm.
The failure mode is always the same — one dropper in the middle of the column got placed facing sideways, and items quietly leak out of the side of your wall. Check the mouths before you seal it in.
Farms and traps worth copying
- Automatic honeycomb. A dispenser holding shears aimed at a full bee nest harvests it without angering the bees, which is the whole reason to automate it. Wire a comparator to the nest so it only fires at full honey level. Full build in the bee and honey farm guide.
- Bone meal on a clock. A dispenser pointed at saplings, crops, kelp or bamboo applies bone meal on every pulse. Saplings and most crops only advance a stage some of the time, so the clock is simply doing the work of your right hand over and over until they pop. - Water flushing in mob grinders. Load a dispenser with a water bucket and pulse it. The first pulse places the water and leaves an empty bucket; the next pulse scoops the source back up. One block, one clock, an endless flush cycle.
- Pumpkin helmets. A dispenser holding a carved pumpkin equips it on your head when you stand in front of it, which is the standard way to make an enderman farm comfortable to stand in. Take your real helmet off first, because the dispenser only fills an empty head slot, and take the pumpkin off by hand afterwards — no dispenser can swap out something you are already wearing.
- Ignition arrays. Flint and steel or fire charges for TNT blasting, relighting a portal, or a lava-free flame trap.
- Rate limiting. A dropper firing into a hopper releases stock one item at a time, which is how you drip-feed a furnace array or an auto-brewer instead of dumping a whole stack in.
- Randomisers. Put one of several different items into a single dropper and every pulse gives you a genuinely random one, because the slot choice is random.
Why yours isn't firing
- A lever is left in the on position. It fired once, when you flicked it. Use a button, an observer, or a clock instead of a switch.
- A hopper underneath is draining the ammo. A hopper below a dispenser pulls arrows out as fast as you load them. Feed from the top or the side, and if you genuinely need output collection underneath, lock that hopper with a comparator signal.
- The target container is full. A dropper facing a full chest does nothing at all — no ejection, no item loss, no error. It just sits there while your clock runs.
- You expected a block to be placed. Dispensing cobblestone builds nothing. If you want blocks placed, you want a piston pushing a block, not a dispenser.
- You expected armour to be swapped. A dispenser will not replace gear that is already worn. Empty the slot first, or the helmet just lands on the floor.
- Water in the Nether. A dispensed water bucket evaporates the instant it is placed, which leaves the dispenser holding an empty bucket with no source block in front to scoop back up — so the next pulse simply ejects that bucket onto the floor. Flush designs copied from the Overworld do not survive the trip.
- Mixed contents. One stray egg in a full box of arrows means roughly one activation in nine throws the egg. Keep ammo boxes pure.
- Phantom activations. If your dispenser fires when nothing obvious triggered it, look for a powered block sitting directly above it — that is quasi-connectivity, and any nearby block update will set it off.
- Arrow buildup. Arrow traps that fire into a wall leave stuck arrows as entities. Give them water to wash into a hopper, or a two-block drop into lava, or your frame rate will tell you about it.
Choosing between them in one line
Ask what you want to happen to the item. If it should do something — fly, ignite, water, grow, equip, explode — you want a dispenser. If it should simply arrive somewhere else — up a shaft, into a hopper, onto the ground one at a time — you want a dropper, and it will do that job more cheaply and more quietly.
