How to Build an Amethyst Farm
Budding amethyst can never be mined, so the farm gets built around it. Geode layers, growth stages, and a piston harvester that actually pays.
Amethyst is fully renewable, and it is one of the very few renewable materials whose source block you can never pick up. Budding amethyst drops nothing — no tool, no enchantment, no exception — so an amethyst farm is not something you build on a flat plot near your base. It is something you build inside the geode, around the blocks the world generator happened to drop there. Get that right and a single geode pays out shards forever: spyglasses, stacks of tinted glass, and every calibrated sculk sensor you will ever wire up.
Find a geode first
Amethyst geodes generate deep underground throughout the Overworld, roughly between Y=-58 and Y=30. That is the same depth band you would already be tunnelling through looking for diamonds, so the cheapest way to find one is a normal deep mining trip with your eyes open. You will not stumble over one while walking around on land — the only places they show up without digging are big open caves and the floor of a deep ocean. The best Y level for every ore covers the depths worth spending time at.
Two reliable tells:
- Calcite in a cave wall. The outer shell of a geode is smooth basalt and the layer under it is calcite. Calcite generates nowhere else in the Overworld, so a band of it is a geode every time. Check the texture and not just the colour, because diorite is also pale, also generates in bulk, and is far more common.
- An open purple pocket. Geodes frequently intersect caves, which shears the shell open and exposes the crystal interior. If you can see amethyst from a cave passage, you have already arrived.
What is actually inside
A geode is four layers, outside in:
- 1.A smooth basalt shell.
- 2.A calcite layer under it.
- 3.A layer of amethyst blocks.
- 4.A hollow centre, with amethyst clusters growing inwards from budding amethyst blocks embedded in that amethyst layer.
Budding amethyst is the entire point of the structure. It looks like a plain amethyst block with a scattering of raised nodes on every face — learn to spot the difference before you swing a pickaxe, because the mistake is permanent.
How many budding blocks a geode contains varies, and it is fixed at world generation. Budding amethyst does not spread and does not convert ordinary amethyst blocks into more of itself. Whatever the geode gave you is your permanent hardware. The plain amethyst blocks around it are just building material — mine those freely.
How clusters actually grow
A face grows through four stages: a small amethyst bud, then medium, then large, then a fully grown amethyst cluster.
The rules that matter:
- A budding block can grow a bud on any of its six faces, as long as the block touching that face is air or a water source block. Flowing water does not count. One bud per face, so six at once is the maximum for a fully exposed block.
- Growth is driven by random ticks, and it is far slower than most people assume. On each random tick a budding block has a one-in-five chance of doing anything at all, and when it does, it picks one of its six faces at random and advances that one face by a single stage. Everything else that tick is wasted.
- Put numbers on it: a given block gets a random tick about once a minute in a loaded chunk, so a single face advances one stage every half hour or so on average, and a bare face needs something in the region of two hours of loaded time to reach a harvestable cluster.
- That is an average, not a schedule. It is genuinely random — one face may finish in twenty minutes and the face next to it may sulk for four hours.
- Exposing more faces gets you more clusters growing in parallel, and stops the block wasting rolls on blocked faces. It does not make any individual face grow faster.
- Light level does not matter. Torches do not slow growth and darkness does not speed it up. Light the geode properly.
- Random ticks only happen in loaded chunks within simulation distance. If nobody is nearby and it is not in the spawn chunks, nothing grows. An amethyst farm you visit once a week has been idle all week.
Mob-proofing is not optional here. A creeper detonating inside your geode can permanently delete budding amethyst, which is the only unrecoverable loss in the whole build. Torch the calcite walls before you do anything else — base lighting and mob proofing covers doing it properly.
The drops, and the trade-off they force
Only the final stage is worth anything. Small, medium and large buds drop nothing at all when broken without Silk Touch — no partial credit.
- A fully grown cluster mined with a pickaxe drops 4 amethyst shards, and more with Fortune.
- A fully grown cluster broken any other way, including by a piston head, drops 2 shards.
- Silk Touch on a fully grown cluster gives you the cluster block itself. You can replant it on any solid surface as decoration, but it is inert — clusters do not grow, only budding amethyst does.
That split is the entire design decision. Automation halves your yield per cluster and buys you not having to be there. Both builds below are legitimate; pick based on whether you actually visit.
Build one: exposed geode, Fortune pickaxe
The highest-yield build uses no redstone at all.
- 1.Hollow the interior out to the amethyst block layer. Take the plain amethyst blocks. Leave every budding block exactly where it is.
- 2.Around each budding block, mine away the amethyst blocks touching it so that as many of its six faces as possible open onto air. Six exposed faces means six clusters growing simultaneously off one block instead of one or two.
- 3.Light the chamber from the calcite and basalt walls, never by placing a torch in a space where you want a bud to grow — a torch occupying that block blocks that face for as long as it is there.
- 4.Come back with a Fortune pickaxe and clear the lot. Fortune stacks on the base 4-shard drop, so it is worth bringing the good tool. Best enchantments has the priority order if you are still deciding where your levels go.
If the geode is anywhere near a route you already walk, this is the correct build. It is faster to make, has nothing to break, and pays double.
Build two: the piston harvester
Automation works because pistons destroy amethyst clusters. The head is not moving the cluster — it is occupying the space, which breaks it and drops the shards.
For every face you want to automate:
- The budding amethyst block.
- Exactly one block of air in front of it. This is the growth space.
- A piston two blocks out, facing the budding block, so that when it extends its head fills the growth space.
Then:
- The piston must sit retracted. An extended piston means the growth space is occupied and that face grows nothing. Keep the pulse short and let it snap back immediately.
- Regular pistons only. Sticky pistons buy you nothing here and cost slime.
- Never build the piston flush against the budding block. No air gap, no buds, no farm.
- Because budding amethyst cannot be pushed, you cannot tidy the layout into a neat wall. Each face gets wired where it stands. Run a dust line along the top or back of the pistons and accept that the build will look like it grew out of the rock, because it did.
For collection, either lay the chamber floor as hoppers feeding a chest, or flood it: buds grow in water just as happily as in air, so a flooded growth chamber lets the drops wash along to a single hopper with no item floor at all. Make sure every growth space ends up holding a full water source block rather than flowing water, or that face stops growing entirely. Timing the pistons — this is where farms fail
The single most common failure is a fast clock. A piston firing every thirty seconds spends its entire life smashing small and medium buds, which drop nothing, and resetting every face back to bare. The redstone runs constantly, the chest fills at almost nothing, and the build looks perfect. Three options, in order of how much I would actually recommend them:
- A lever. Flip on, flip off, collect, walk away. For a farm you visit anyway, this is genuinely the right answer.
- A very slow clock. Think hours between pulses, not minutes. A face needs roughly two hours to finish, so a clock that fires every few hours wastes very little growth while anything faster than about an hour is mostly demolishing immature buds. - Observer counting. An observer watching a growth space fires on every block state change — which includes the three intermediate stages you do not want to harvest — so you need to count four pulses before triggering. Accurate, satisfying, and far more redstone than shards are worth. Observers explained if you want to build it anyway.
What the shards are for
- Spyglass. One amethyst shard above two copper ingots, stacked vertically. Zoom, and a surprisingly good navigation tool.
- Tinted glass. One glass block with an amethyst shard on each of its four sides, producing two tinted glass. It blocks light completely while staying see-through, and unlike ordinary glass it drops itself when broken without Silk Touch. That combination is why it ends up in every mob farm and observation window.
- Calibrated sculk sensor. A sculk sensor plus three amethyst shards. The calibrated version takes a redstone signal on its back to filter which vibration frequency it listens for, which turns sculk from a novelty into a usable sensor. - Amethyst blocks. Four shards in a 2x2. Purely decorative, and there is no recipe to turn them back into shards, so do not compress a chest of amethyst you still intend to use.
Quick troubleshooting
- Nothing has grown at all. A face is blocked — torch, sign, slab, flowing water, or a piston left extended — or the chunk simply is not being loaded and ticked. Give it a couple of hours of loaded time before you conclude anything is actually broken.
- The farm runs but the chest is nearly empty. The clock is too fast. Slow it down by an order of magnitude and check again the next day, not the next hour.
- A budding block has disappeared. Creeper, or your own pickaxe. Neither is recoverable. Light the interior fully.
- Shards are vanishing. Items despawn after five minutes. Get water or hoppers under every harvest space, not just most of them.
