The Best Y-Level for Every Ore (Mining Guide)
Stop guessing where to mine. Here's the exact Y-level where each ore is most common in modern Minecraft.
Since the deeper world generation, every ore has a "sweet spot" where it's most common. Press F3 to check your Y-level, then dig at these heights.
Best Y-levels
- Diamond: Y = -59 (just above bedrock)
- Redstone: Y = -59 (same as diamond)
- Lapis Lazuli: Y = 0
- Gold: Y = -16 (much higher, Y 32–79, in Badlands)
- Iron: Y = 15 (also peaks high in mountains around Y 232)
- Copper: Y = 48 (great in Dripstone Caves)
- Coal: Y = 96 (and common everywhere above 0)
- Emerald: Y = 232, but only in mountain biomes
How to mine efficiently
- 1.Dig down to the target Y-level.
- 2.Branch mine: cut a straight tunnel, then side tunnels every 3 blocks. This exposes the most stone for the least digging.
- 3.Bring Efficiency and Fortune pickaxes — Fortune multiplies diamonds, coal, redstone, lapis and emerald drops.
TipBelow Y=0 you're in deepslate, which is slower to mine — bring spare pickaxes or Efficiency enchants.
Safety
- Carry a water bucket to escape lava (huge lava lakes sit around Y=-59).
- Never dig straight down — you can fall into lava or a cave.
- Light tunnels with torches to stop mobs spawning behind you.
