Abandoned Camps: Where They Spawn and What Loot They Hold
Abandoned Camps generate in 18 biomes, mostly forests and taigas. Chests hold copper gear and camp maps, and a hidden copper chest can hold a Diamond.
Camps were added in Java Edition 26.3, the Wilderness Bound drop. They only generate in chunks created in 26.3 or later, so in an older world head for land you have never loaded.
Biomes where Abandoned Camps generate
Each of these 18 biomes has its own camp variant, and no other biome gets one:
- Forests: Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Flower Forest, Dappled Forest, Pale Garden
- Hills and mountain slopes: Windswept Forest, Meadow, Cherry Grove
- Taigas: Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga
- Savanna, badlands, jungle and swamp: Savanna, Wooded Badlands, Sparse Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, Swamp
You won't find one in Plains, Desert, Dark Forest, Jungle, Mangrove Swamp, the other Badlands biomes or any snowy biome except Snowy Taiga.
How to find an Abandoned Camp
Two camp spots are always at least 9 chunks (144 blocks) apart, and they are slightly sparser than village spots. The game picks one random chunk in every square of 37 by 37 chunks (592 by 592 blocks); villages use 34 by 34. If that chunk lies in one of the 18 biomes, a camp of that biome's variant generates there. If it lands in any other biome, that square gets no camp.
With cheats on:
/locate structure #minecraft:abandoned_campfinds the nearest camp of any variant./locate structure minecraft:abandoned_camp_dappled_forestfinds one variant. Each variant ID isabandoned_camp_plus the biome ID, such asabandoned_camp_cherry_grove.
In survival:
- Explore any of the 18 biomes and watch for a white wool tent and an unlit campfire at ground level.
- Loot the common chest and follow its camp map. Depending on the biome, 66% to 90% of camps have at least one common chest, so one camp often leads to the next.
- Open the seed map for your seed. It marks every spot where the game tries a camp but doesn't check biomes, so a marker is only a camp if it falls in one of the 18 biomes.
What a camp looks like
A camp is one tent with one campsite in front of it. Each biome has 10 tent designs. The campsite comes from 49 designs: 45 shared by every biome and 4 unique to that biome.
- The tent is White Wool Stairs over fence posts of the local wood: Poplar Fence in a Dappled Forest, Pale Oak Fence in a Pale Garden, Acacia Fence in a Savanna, Spruce Fence in the taigas. Cobwebs replace parts of some tents.
- Inside the tent are up to 4 Straw Beds (most tents have one or two) and one to four barrels or chests. Some add a Crafting Table, a Water Cauldron or an Oxidized Copper Lantern.
- The campsite always has an unlit Campfire and at least one Cushion, usually one to three. Colours vary by design. A few add a small patch of Wheat, Carrots or Potatoes, or some Pumpkins or Hay Bales.
- Trees: some designs plant the biome's own trees beside the tent, such as red, orange and yellow poplars at a Dappled Forest camp.
Mine the tent's Straw Beds to keep them. Each one skips a night without moving your spawn point, then breaks.
The hidden Oxidized Copper Chest
The best loot sits in an Oxidized Copper Chest with its own "secret chest" loot table. It only appears in the campsite, never in the tent. In most biomes 19 of the 49 campsite designs include one, so about 2 camps in 5 have it. In Birch Forest, Taiga, Snowy Taiga and Old Growth Spruce Taiga it is 18 of 49.
It sits up to three blocks below the campfire's level, and something almost always covers it. In every biome, about a third of these chests sit under a barrel or chest and about a third under gravel. Most of the rest are under the campfire itself, a Hay Bale, a Cobweb or water.
Abandoned Camp loot tables
Chances are per container, computed from the game's loot tables.
Barrels
A barrel rolls 4 to 8 times on 14 equally weighted items, so each item turns up in about 36% of barrels. It also always holds one of a Bundle, a Wooden Axe or a Fishing Rod.
| Items | Count per roll |
|---|---|
| Straw Bed, Bone, Coal | 2–4 |
| Rabbit Hide, Wheat | 1–4 |
| Arrow, Bread, Glass Bottle, Leather, White Candle | 1–3 |
| Bowl, String, White Cushion | 1–2 |
| Cobweb | 1 |
Common chests
| Part | Rolls | Items (count) | Chance of each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supplies | 4–6 | Arrow (4), Bone (2–4), Gunpowder (2–4), Glass Bottle (1–4), Leather (1–4), Rabbit Hide (1–4), Lead (1–3), White Candle (1–3), Cobweb, Compass, Fishing Rod, Flint and Steel, Bundle, Saddle | about 27% |
| Supplies | same rolls | Empty Map (1–2) | about 48% (it is listed twice, so each roll is twice as likely to pick it) |
| Gear | 2 | Bow, Bucket, Copper Axe, Copper Boots, Copper Chestplate, Copper Leggings, Copper Spear, Copper Sword, Spyglass, Shears | 19% |
| Map | 1 | One camp map | always, if a target is found |
Half of all common chests (51%) hold at least one piece of copper armour.
Secret chests
| Part | Rolls | Items (count) | Chance of each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valuables | 2 | Diamond, Potion of Healing, Potion of Leaping, Potion of Night Vision, Potion of Swiftness (1 each) | 36% |
| Materials | 4–6 | Copper Ingot (1–2), Gold Ingot (1–2), Iron Ingot (1), Empty Map (1) | 76% |
| Iron gear | 0–1 | Iron Axe, Iron Boots, Iron Leggings, Iron Spear | 12.5% |
| Map | 1 | One of seven explorer maps (1 in 7 each) | always, if a target is found |
Overall, 96% of secret chests hold at least one potion and half hold a piece of iron gear.
Where the maps lead
Camp maps. Each common chest rolls one Abandoned Camp Map marking another camp. Only eight variants have maps: the Bamboo Camp Map (for Bamboo Jungle camps) and the Birch Forest, Cherry Grove, Dappled Forest, Flower Forest, Pale Garden, Swamp and Windswept Forest Camp Maps. A chest never gives the map for the biome it stands in, so a chest standing in a swamp never gives a Swamp Camp Map. Camps in the other ten biomes have no map pointing to them.
Explorer maps. Each secret chest rolls one of these seven. The first four come from nowhere else.
| Map | Leads to | Other source |
|---|---|---|
| Buried Ancient City Map | An Ancient City in the Deep Dark | None |
| Buried Mineshaft Map | A Mineshaft | None |
| Desert Pyramid Map | A Desert Pyramid | None |
| Warm Ocean Ruins Map | Warm Ocean Ruins | None |
| Buried Trial Chambers Map | Trial Chambers | Journeyman Cartographer |
| Jungle Pyramid Map | A Jungle Pyramid | Apprentice Cartographer (desert, savanna and swamp villagers only) |
| Woodland Mansion Map | A Woodland Mansion | Master Cartographer |
The villager trading guide explains how to level a Cartographer.
A map is drawn when you open the chest, searching outward from it, and it skips structures an earlier map already marked. If it finds nothing in range, that map is dropped, though the chest can still hold Empty Maps. You can copy these maps at a Crafting Table, but you can't zoom them out. Map basics are in how to make and use maps.
