Dappled Forest Biome: How to Find It and What's Inside
The Dappled Forest is a red, orange and yellow poplar forest near cold biomes. With cheats on, /locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest finds one.
The biome arrived in Java Edition 26.3, the Wilderness Bound game drop released on 15 September 2026, and it is the only biome where poplar trees, Shelf Mushrooms and Red Shrubs grow wild. Where the Dappled Forest generates
It generates in cold, dry regions, bordering Plains, Sunflower Plains, Ice Spikes and Cherry Grove but never another woodland biome. It can sit on flat ground, near Cold Oceans or in mountains near Frozen Peaks. Some are a handful of trees; others stretch for hundreds of blocks, often cut off from neighbouring plains by a river or a mountain valley.
Finding it with /locate
Type /locate biome minecraft:dappled_forest with cheats on. Chat replies with coordinates and a distance, and clicking the coordinates puts a /tp @s command in the chat box. The search covers 12,801 × 12,801 blocks around you, so about 6,400 blocks in each direction.
Finding it in survival
- Explore cold regions and watch for orange grass beside Plains, Sunflower Plains, Ice Spikes or Cherry Groves, or in mountains near Frozen Peaks.
- Loot the common chests at Abandoned Camps in other biomes. Each chest rolls one camp map, and one of the possible maps is the Dappled Forest Camp Map, which marks a camp inside a Dappled Forest (how camp maps work).
Since 26.3, Adventuring Time needs 56 biomes, and this is the new one.
What generates there
Each chunk gets six tree attempts, drawn from this mix:

A standing poplar is a single Poplar Log trunk with one to four branches under a large rhombus-shaped canopy, and each colour drops matching falling-leaf particles. On the ground you'll find Red Shrub patches (one attempt per chunk, up to eight shrubs), Brown Mushroom patches in about half the chunks, grass and patches of Coarse Dirt. The biome has no flowers, sugar cane, pumpkins or berry bushes.
Underground is ordinary Overworld: the usual ores, Amethyst Geodes, dungeons and lava lakes. Emerald Ore never generates in the biome, even where it climbs into mountains.

Weights compare mobs within a row: sheep are the most common animal, but hostile and animal weights aren't comparable.
- Pigs, cows and chickens spawn as their cold variants.
- Foxes come in groups of two to four with the red coat, not the snow coat.
- No wolves spawn. In Java Edition this is the only biome where foxes spawn and wolves don't. Foxes breed with Sweet Berries or Glow Berries, and neither grows here, so bring some.
- Slimes appear only in slime chunks, as in most biomes.

Shelf Mushrooms go in Mushroom Stew, Suspicious Stew and Rabbit Stew, but not Fermented Spider Eye; the 26.3 overview covers the new stew recipes and Red Shrubs. Landing on a Shelf Mushroom works like landing on a bed: you bounce, and only half your fall counts toward damage.
If you can't find a Dappled Forest, the Wandering Trader can offer 8 Poplar Logs for 1 Emerald, a Poplar Sapling for 5 Emeralds or 3 Shelf Mushrooms for 1 Emerald. Each is one of many possible offers, so none is guaranteed.
The Dappled Forest Abandoned Camp
Dappled Forest camps are the only ones whose tents are framed with Poplar Fence, and 6 of the 10 tent designs plant a poplar beside the tent. Use /locate structure minecraft:abandoned_camp_dappled_forest to find the nearest one. As in most biomes, 19 of the 49 campsite designs include an Oxidized Copper Chest, so about 2 camps in 5 have the secret loot chest. The abandoned camps guide covers its loot and where to dig for it.
Building with poplar wood
Poplar has a full wood set, and Poplar Planks work in every recipe that takes any planks, such as the Crafting Table, Chest and Sticks.

Strip logs with an axe before you craft the hanging sign or shelf. Spare logs smelt into Charcoal. In a furnace, a poplar log or plank burns for 15 seconds (300 ticks), enough to smelt 1.5 items, the same as other Overworld wood; the fuel calculator compares fuels.
Mojang pitches the biome as a place to "build outposts among the poplar trees". For a ready plan, the woodland campsite build is a white wool tent with a fire ring and a woodpile; swap its spruce for poplar and roof it with Wool Stairs. The sheep here supply the wool.
