Minecraft Combat Basics: Cooldown, Crits and Shields
Attack cooldown, critical hits, when an axe beats a sword, and how shields actually work — the mechanics that decide fights.
Minecraft combat looks like clicking quickly. It is not — clicking quickly is close to the worst thing you can do. A handful of mechanics decide almost every fight.
Attack cooldown
Every weapon has a cooldown after each swing, and hitting before it finishes deals massively reduced damage.
The little bar that fills next to your crosshair is the cooldown indicator. Wait for it to fill, then swing.
Spam-clicking a zombie with a diamond sword can genuinely do less total damage than timed swings with a stone one. This single mechanic separates players who "cannot beat the warden" from players who can.
Different weapons recover at different speeds:
- Swords recover fast — roughly 0.6 seconds.
- Axes recover slowly — roughly 1 second.
- Tridents, pickaxes and shovels sit in between, and none of them are weapons you should be using.
Critical hits
Attack while falling — not rising, not standing — and you deal a critical hit for 50% extra damage, with the little star particles to confirm it.
The practical technique: jump, and swing on the way down. Every hit you land can be a crit if you time it.
Crits do not work while you are:
- Sprinting
- Climbing a ladder or vine
- In water
- Affected by Blindness
- Riding anything
That is why "jump and hit" beats "run and hit" in almost every fight.
Sword or axe?
Both are real options and they play differently:
Sword
- Faster recovery, so more swings per second.
- Sweeping Edge hits multiple mobs at once, which is why swords clear crowds.
- Lower damage per hit.
Axe
- Higher damage per hit — a netherite axe hits harder than a netherite sword.
- Slower recovery.
- Disables shields for 5 seconds when it hits a shielding target. This is the single most important fact in player-versus-player combat.
Use a sword for mobs and crowds. Use an axe against anything holding a shield, and in PvP.
Shields
A shield blocks all damage from the front. Raise it by holding use, and it stops arrows, melee hits and most explosions from that direction.
Things worth knowing:
- The shield takes a moment to raise — about a quarter of a second. You cannot flick it up mid-hit.
- You move slowly while blocking.
- It only protects the front arc. Anything behind or above you connects.
- An axe hit disables it for five seconds, leaving you completely open.
- It does not stop status effects from witch potions.
Against skeletons a shield is close to an auto-win — walk at them behind it, drop it, swing, raise it again.
Armour and enchantments
Armour reduces incoming damage; enchantments do the heavy lifting:
- Protection IV on everything is the general-purpose answer.
- Blast Protection for creepers and the wither fight.
- Projectile Protection for pillagers, skeletons and raids.
- Feather Falling IV on boots prevents more deaths than any combat enchantment.
- Thorns damages attackers but wrecks your own durability. Skip it early on.
Best enchantments ranks these properly, and the anvil and mending guide covers combining books without hitting "Too Expensive".
Knockback and positioning
- Knockback and Punch push enemies away, which buys you time but pushes mobs out of your kill zone. Great in a fight, bad at a farm.
- Sprinting into an attack adds knockback automatically.
- Fighting on higher ground means melee mobs cannot reach you.
- Doorways and one-block gaps funnel crowds into one attacker at a time.
Potions worth carrying
- Healing or Regeneration for emergencies.
- Strength for boss fights.
- Fire Resistance for anything in the Nether — it trivialises blazes and lava.
- Slow Falling pairs perfectly with an elytra.
- Milk clears every effect, good and bad. Carry one bucket.
The potion brewing guide covers making them, and every status effect explained has the full list.
The short version
Wait for the cooldown bar. Jump and hit on the way down. Carry a shield against anything ranged, and an axe against anything carrying a shield. Get Protection IV and Feather Falling before you worry about anything else.
