Every Status Effect in Minecraft, Explained

From Haste to Wither — a clear rundown of every buff and debuff and where each one comes from.

Status effects change how your character plays. Here's what each one does and how you get it.

Helpful effects

  • Speed / Slowness — move faster / slower.
  • Haste / Mining Fatigue — mine faster / much slower (Elder Guardians inflict fatigue).
  • Strength / Weakness — more / less melee damage.
  • Regeneration — heals you over time.
  • Resistance — reduces incoming damage.
  • Fire Resistance — immunity to fire and lava.
  • Water Breathing — breathe underwater.
  • Night Vision — see in the dark.
  • Invisibility — mobs mostly ignore you (armour still shows).
  • Jump Boost — jump higher and take less fall damage.
  • Absorption — bonus "yellow" health that doesn't regenerate.
  • Slow Falling — fall gently, no fall damage.
  • Hero of the Village — trade discounts after winning a raid.

Harmful effects

  • Poison — drains health (never to death).
  • Wither — drains health (can kill).
  • Hunger — empties your hunger bar faster.
  • Nausea — wobbles the screen.
  • Blindness / Darkness — limits your view (Darkness warns a Warden is near).
  • Levitation — floats you upward (Shulkers).
  • Bad Omen — triggers a raid when you enter a village.

Where they come from

  • Potions — brewed at a Brewing Stand (full recipe list).
  • Beacons — area buffs like Haste and Speed (beacon guide).
  • Food — golden apples (Absorption/Regen), suspicious stew.
  • Mobs & blocks — Cave spiders poison, magma blocks burn, Wardens inflict Darkness.
TipMilk removes all effects instantly — carry a bucket to cancel Poison, Wither or a bad potion in a pinch.
