Elytra Flying: Rockets, Range and Not Dying

Finding an elytra is the easy part. Flying it well — covering thousands of blocks without dying or burning a shulker box of rockets — takes a few specific techniques.

Starting a flight

Equip the elytra in your chestplate slot, get some height, and press jump while falling to deploy.

You need altitude to start. Jumping off flat ground does nothing useful. From a tower, a hillside or the top of your base, you glide.

Without rockets, an elytra is a glider: you trade height for distance at roughly a 1-to-10 ratio. Every block of height gets you about ten blocks forward. That is enough for getting down a mountain, not for crossing a continent.

Firework boosting

This is what turns gliding into flying. Hold a firework rocket and use it while gliding — it shoves you forward hard, and you keep that speed.

Some rules worth knowing:

• Use plain rockets with no star. A rocket with a firework star explodes and damages you.
• Flight duration 3 rockets give the longest boost. Craft with three gunpowder and one paper.
• Look where you want to go before firing. The boost follows your view direction.
• Rockets stack to 64, and a stack covers a very long distance.

Rocket maths, roughly

A duration-3 rocket accelerates you and the speed decays over a few seconds. In level flight you get somewhere in the region of a few hundred blocks per rocket, depending on your angle and starting speed.

The practical numbers most players land on:

• A stack of 64 rockets comfortably crosses several thousand blocks.
• Flying in the Nether covers eight times the overworld distance per block travelled, so a handful of rockets there goes enormously far. See nether travel and coordinates.

Gunpowder is the bottleneck. A creeper farm makes rockets effectively free, and it is the natural pairing with an elytra.

Flying efficiently

Rocket efficiency depends almost entirely on your angle:

• Fire while pointing slightly upward, then level out and glide down. You convert the boost into height, then spend the height as distance.
• Do not fly nose-down. You accelerate but you burn altitude and hit the ground.
• Do not fly straight up. You climb slowly and gain almost nothing.
• A gentle sawtooth — boost up, glide down, boost up — is the most efficient pattern over long distances.

Get high first. Altitude is stored rocket fuel.

Repairing an elytra

Elytra have 432 durability and become unusable at 1 rather than breaking outright, so you always get a warning.

Two ways to fix one:

• Phantom membrane on an anvil. Each membrane restores a chunk of durability. Phantoms spawn if you have not slept for a few in-game days, which is an easy farm to run by accident.
• Mending. Far and away the better answer — put Mending on your elytra and it repairs itself from any XP you pick up. The anvil and mending guide covers combining it, and best enchantments explains why Mending is worth prioritising.

Unbreaking III on top of Mending makes an elytra effectively permanent.

What kills people

Almost every elytra death is one of four things:

1. 1.Flying into a wall at speed. Fatal at high velocity. Watch the terrain ahead, not your inventory.
2. 2.Running out of rockets over an ocean or the void. Always carry more than you think you need.
3. 3.Landing badly. Elytra do not remove fall damage. Level out and skim the ground, or land in water.
4. 4.Getting shot down. Ghasts in the Nether and skeletons on approach will interrupt a flight at the worst moment.

The safest landing technique is to level out low and let friction slow you, rather than aiming at the ground. A water bucket is the traditional emergency brake — throw it at the ground as you land.

Combining with other travel

Elytra do not replace everything. For pure distance, the Nether roof and a nether highway still beat flying — 1 block in the Nether is 8 in the overworld, so flying *in* the Nether is the fastest travel in the game by a wide margin.

For repeat journeys, set up portals with matching coordinates and fly between them.
