How to Build a Creeper Farm for Gunpowder
Gunpowder for TNT, rockets and fireworks. How to filter creepers from every other mob using nothing but sunlight and slab spacing.
Gunpowder gates two things people want badly: TNT for mining and clearing, and firework rockets for flying with an Elytra. A creeper farm makes both unlimited.
The filtering problem
Creepers spawn in the same conditions as most hostile mobs — on solid blocks, in darkness. The difficulty is that zombies, skeletons and spiders spawn there too, and they compete for the same spawn cap. A general mob farm gives you gunpowder as a fraction of its output.
A dedicated creeper farm uses two properties to filter almost everything else out.
Trick one: creepers do not burn in sunlight
Zombies, skeletons, husks and strays all burn in daylight. Creepers and spiders do not.
So a spawning platform exposed to the sky kills off the burning mobs at dawn every day, leaving creepers and spiders behind. That single fact removes most of your competition for free, with no redstone and no filtering machinery.
Trick two: spiders need a 3x3 footprint
Spiders require a larger flat area to spawn than other mobs. Restricting your spawning surfaces so no 3x3 area of solid blocks exists prevents spiders entirely.
The usual approach is slabs, or narrow platforms with gaps. Careful spacing means creepers can spawn but spiders cannot.
Combine both tricks and your platform produces overwhelmingly creepers.
Building it
- 1.Build in the sky or over an ocean. As with every mob farm, the point is to make your platforms the only valid spawn surfaces in range. Height also gives you the open sky the sunlight trick needs.
- 2.Make spawning platforms open to the sky. No roof. This is what lets zombies and skeletons burn off.
- 3.Use slab spacing so no 3x3 solid area exists, blocking spiders.
- 4.Give creepers somewhere to walk. Water streams work fine here — this is the Overworld, so unlike a gold farm you have water available. Flow them toward a central drop.
- 5.Drop them. Creepers have 20 health. A fall that leaves them nearly dead lets you finish them by hand for the XP, or kill them outright for a fully automatic farm.
- 6.Hoppers into a chest for the gunpowder.
Killing creepers without explosions
Creepers only explode when they get close to a player and complete their fuse. In a farm this is easy to avoid:
- Fall damage kills them with no risk at all.
- A one-block gap you strike through means they never reach you.
- Do not stand adjacent to them in the collection area. If a creeper is beside you and hissing, back away — the fuse resets when you leave range.
If you want charged creepers for mob heads, that requires lightning striking a creeper, which is a separate and much fiddlier build. Standard farms do not produce them.
What gunpowder is for
- TNT — one gunpowder plus sand. For mining, clearing land, and TNT duplication setups.
- Firework rockets — paper plus gunpowder. The number of gunpowder sets the flight duration.
- Elytra flight. This is the big one. Rockets are what make an Elytra genuinely useful for travel, and sustained flying consumes them steadily.
- Firework stars for decorative displays.
- Splash potions — gunpowder converts any potion into a throwable version. See our brewing guide.
Rockets are the reason most players build this farm. Once you have an Elytra, rocket supply becomes the actual limit on how much you fly, and hand-collecting gunpowder from wandering creepers does not keep up.
Rates and expectations
Creeper farms are slower than gold farms or enderman farms in raw items per hour, because Overworld spawn rates are lower and the filtering discards some spawns. That is fine — you do not need gunpowder at the same volume as gold or XP.
To improve output: build more platform area, and make sure nothing else within range can spawn mobs. Light or slab-cover every cave and ledge nearby, or build far out over an ocean where the problem does not exist.
Combining with a general mob farm
Many players build a general mob grinder first, since it produces bones, string, arrows and gunpowder together, then add a dedicated creeper farm later once rockets become the bottleneck. Both are worth having, and the mob grinder is considerably easier as a first project.
