How to Get an Elytra and Fly Across Your World
The Elytra turns Minecraft into a flight sim. Here's how to reach one and keep it flying forever.
The Elytra is a pair of wings that let you glide — and with fireworks, fly indefinitely. It's the biggest mobility upgrade in the game.
Where to find it
Elytra are found only in End Cities, on the floating End Ships:
- 1.Beat the Ender Dragon and go through the exit portal.
- 2.Travel across the outer End islands (throw Ender Pearls or bridge over) until you find an End City.
- 3.Look for a purpur End Ship floating beside it, guarded by shulkers.
- 4.The Elytra hangs in an item frame on the ship. Grab it and equip it in your chest slot.
TipShulkers levitate you with their projectiles — drink milk to cancel it, and bring a bow to snipe them from range before they hit you.
How to fly
- Jump off a high point and press jump again to deploy the wings.
- To fly upward and stay airborne, use fireworks rockets — right-click one while gliding for a speed boost. Craft rockets from paper + gunpowder.
- Rockets with more gunpowder give a bigger boost.
Keep it forever
Elytra wear out with use. Repair them with:
- Phantom Membranes (from killing phantoms) on an anvil, or
- Mending — the best option, since it repairs automatically as you gain XP.
