How to Build a Mob Grinder for XP and Loot
A mob grinder gives endless XP, gunpowder, bones and string. Here's a simple, reliable design.
A mob grinder farms hostile mobs for XP, gunpowder, bones, string and arrows — the backbone of any late-game base.
How it works
Hostile mobs spawn in the dark. A grinder gives them a big dark platform to spawn on, then uses water channels to sweep them into a drop that damages them so you can finish them in one hit (for full XP and drops).
Basic dark-room design
- 1.Build a large enclosed room high in the sky (mobs spawn best away from other spawnable areas).
- 2.Keep it completely dark — no torches inside.
- 3.Use water streams to push mobs to a central hole.
- 4.Make them fall about 22 blocks — enough to leave most mobs at half a heart.
- 5.Stand at the bottom and one-shot them, collecting XP orbs and drops via hoppers → chest.
TipBuild it at least 24 blocks away from where you stand and light up nearby caves, or mobs will spawn elsewhere instead of in your farm.
Spawner farms (even easier)
If you find a dungeon spawner (zombie, skeleton or spider), build around it: dark room, water to a drop or a place you can hit them. Spawners produce mobs constantly with no need for a huge dark platform.
Uses
- XP for enchanting and Mending repairs.
- Gunpowder for TNT, fireworks and splash potions.
- Bones for bone meal, string for wool and bows.
Combine the XP farm with a villager trading hall and you'll gear up incredibly fast.
