Armour and Protection: How Damage Reduction Really Works
Armour points, toughness, the real damage formula, the 20-point cap and the EPF cap — how much damage your kit actually stops, and what to wear when.
Full netherite with Protection IV lets roughly 8% of a normal hit through. Full iron lets through far more than the armour bar suggests, and against one huge hit it collapses to about a fifth of the protection you thought you had. The difference is not the material — it is a formula the game never shows you. Here it is, with the numbers that actually decide what you wear.
Armour points and what the bar means
Every piece of armour is worth a fixed number of armour points. The bar above your health shows them as ten chestplate icons, each icon worth two points, so a full bar is 20 points.
Full-set totals:
- Leather — 7 points (1 / 3 / 2 / 1)
- Copper — 10 points (2 / 4 / 3 / 1)
- Golden — 11 points (2 / 5 / 3 / 1)
- Chainmail — 12 points (2 / 5 / 4 / 1)
- Iron — 15 points (2 / 6 / 5 / 2)
- Diamond — 20 points (3 / 8 / 6 / 3)
- Netherite — 20 points (3 / 8 / 6 / 3)
Those are helmet / chestplate / leggings / boots. Copper armour arrived in Java 1.21.9 and slots in between leather and chainmail. A turtle shell counts as a helmet worth 2 points, the same as iron.
Notice that diamond and netherite give identical armour points. Netherite is not a bigger number on the bar. What it adds is toughness, knockback resistance and durability, and toughness is where the real difference lives.
The damage reduction formula
Armour points are not a flat percentage. The game runs this every time you are hit:
- 1.Take your total armour points.
- 2.Subtract incoming damage ÷ (2 + toughness ÷ 4).
- 3.Clamp the result: never below one fifth of your armour points, never above 20.
- 4.Multiply by 4%. That is your reduction.
Toughness is 2 per diamond piece (8 for a full set) and 3 per netherite piece (12 for a full set). Every other armour material, copper and turtle shells included, has zero toughness.
Read step 2 again, because it is the whole story: the bigger the hit, the more armour you lose. Armour is brilliant against a stream of small hits and progressively worse against single enormous ones.
Small hit — a 4-damage zombie punch
- Full iron: 15 − (4 ÷ 2) = 13 → 52% reduction, you take 1.9
- Full diamond: 20 − (4 ÷ 4) = 19 → 76% reduction, you take 0.96
- Full netherite: 20 − (4 ÷ 5) = 19.2 → 76.8% reduction, you take 0.93
Diamond and netherite are basically identical here. Anyone telling you netherite is a huge survivability jump against zombies has not done the arithmetic.
Huge hit — a 30-damage explosion
- Full iron: 15 − (30 ÷ 2) = 0, so the floor kicks in at 3 → 12% reduction, you take 26.4
- Full diamond: 20 − (30 ÷ 4) = 12.5 → 50% reduction, you take 15
- Full netherite: 20 − (30 ÷ 5) = 14 → 56% reduction, you take 13.2
Full iron just went from stopping half the damage to stopping an eighth. That is the moment people say "my armour did nothing". It did exactly what the formula says.
The 20-point cap
Step 3 clamps the value at 20, which caps armour points at 80% reduction. No vanilla combination gets past 20 points anyway — diamond and netherite both land exactly on it — so once you are in a full diamond set your armour bar is done improving. Everything after that comes from enchantments, effects and how you fight.
The floor in step 3 matters just as much. Whatever the hit size, you keep at least one fifth of your armour points as reduction: 16% with a full set, 12% in iron. There is no hit big enough to make good armour worthless, but there are plenty big enough to make it nearly so.
Protection, EPF and the second cap
Protection enchantments run through a separate calculation using Enchantment Protection Factor (EPF), summed across all four pieces:
- Protection — 1 EPF per level. Applies to almost every damage source.
- Fire Protection — 2 EPF per level, against fire, lava and burning.
- Blast Protection — 2 EPF per level, against explosions.
- Projectile Protection — 2 EPF per level, against arrows, tridents, fireballs and similar.
- Feather Falling — 3 EPF per level, against fall damage. Boots only.
Total EPF is capped at 20, and each point is worth 4%, so enchantments cap at 80% reduction of whatever survived your armour. The two reductions multiply.
Protection IV on all four pieces is 16 EPF — 64%, not the cap. Be careful with the tidy headline figure people quote for that combination. "20% × 36% = 7.2%" assumes your armour reaches its theoretical 80% ceiling, and step 2 above means it never quite does against a real hit. Take the 4-damage example: full netherite gives 76.8%, so what actually lands on you is 23.2% × 36% = about 8% of the raw damage. Reaching the 20 EPF cap takes that to roughly 4.6%, and the bigger the incoming hit, the less flattering both halves get. The cap is still worth chasing for specific threats:
- Explosions: Blast Protection IV on one piece (8) plus Protection IV on the other three (12) = 20 EPF, the cap, and you keep 48% general protection.
- The Nether: Fire Protection IV on one piece plus Protection IV on the rest hits the cap against lava and fire, which is the difference between a survivable mistake and a death.
- Falls: Feather Falling IV boots (12) plus Protection IV on the other three (12) = 24, clamped to 20. Elytra pilots should know exactly what that buys: Feather Falling covers the fall damage from a bad landing, but flying into a wall deals a separate kinetic damage type that Feather Falling does not touch at all. Only Protection reduces that one.

Only one Protection type per piece
Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection are mutually exclusive on the same item. The anvil will refuse the combination. This is the single most common misunderstanding in armour building, and it is why the sensible loadout is three pieces of Protection plus one specialist — never four specialists.
Putting Blast Protection IV on all four pieces gives 32 EPF, which is clamped to 20. You paid four enchantments for what one Blast piece plus three Protection pieces already gave you, and against every non-explosive threat in the game you now have zero enchantment reduction. Keep the specialist swap on a spare helmet or boots and change it for the job.
What armour does not stop
Armour points do nothing against fall damage, drowning, suffocation in blocks, starvation, magic damage such as Instant Damage or the wither effect, the Warden's sonic boom, or the void. The Protection enchantment still applies to most of those, which is why a fully enchanted set survives falls that unenchanted diamond does not. The two exceptions are worth memorising: the sonic boom ignores armour, shields and enchantments alike, so only the Resistance effect reduces it, and nothing at all saves you from the void.
Two more things worth knowing before they kill you:
- Netherite does not make you fireproof. The item survives lava on the ground; you do not. You still need Fire Resistance or Fire Protection.
- Armour trims are purely cosmetic. A trimmed netherite chestplate has exactly the same stats as an untrimmed one. See the armour trims guide for what they actually do.
Damage during your half-second of invulnerability after a hit is also partly wasted — a swarm of five zombies does not deal five hits' worth of damage. Positioning against a wall so only two can reach you is worth more than a material upgrade.
Which armour for which job
- Golden armour in the Nether. Wearing any single gold piece makes piglins neutral. Gold also has the highest enchantability in the game at 25, so gold pieces pull high-level enchantments off a table cheaply — the durability is the catch.
- Copper when iron is scarce. Ten points and no toughness, but more durable than gold and made from a resource you trip over. Its enchantability of 8 is the lowest of any armour material, so do not burn good levels on it.
- Turtle shell helmet underwater. Two armour points, the same as iron, plus ten extra seconds of breath from the Water Breathing effect it grants. Ocean monuments and building underwater get far easier.
- Diamond for everything general. It is on the 20-point cap. Enchant it properly before you think about upgrading it.
- Netherite for boss fights and explosions. More toughness, roughly 12% more durability, and knockback resistance on every piece so ravagers and blast waves shift you less. Get there via the netherite guide — the upgrade keeps all existing enchantments.
- Leather early on. Seven points is not nothing on night one, and it dyes.
Stack a beacon on top if you are fighting somewhere fixed. A full four-layer pyramid can give Resistance II, a further 40% cut applied on top of everything above.
Durability, and the mistake that ends runs
Armour loses durability whenever it absorbs damage, roughly one point per four points of incoming damage with a minimum of one. Two things follow from that:
- A nearly broken chestplate protects exactly as much as a fresh one. Java does not scale protection with durability. Wear it until it breaks — but know that when it breaks, your reduction disappears mid-fight.
- Unbreaking is far weaker on armour than on tools, and almost everyone has this backwards. A tool skips durability loss 100% ÷ (level + 1) of the time, so Unbreaking III makes a pickaxe last about four times as long. Armour instead has a 60% + 40% ÷ (level + 1) chance that a hit costs durability, so Unbreaking III skips only 30% of hits and stretches the lifetime by about 1.43 times — nowhere near four. The failure mode that ends most survival runs is not weak armour. It is good armour with three pieces at single-digit durability, walking into a fight the player would have avoided in iron. Check the bar before you commit, carry a spare set in a shulker box, and remember that the formula punishes single huge hits — which means the creeper you never let get close is worth more than any enchantment on this page.
