Nether Travel: Coordinates and Portal Linking Explained
The Nether is a fast-travel highway if you understand the 8:1 ratio. Here's how to link portals precisely.
One block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. That means a short walk in the Nether covers huge Overworld distances — if your portals are linked correctly.
The 8:1 rule
To find where an Overworld location lands in the Nether, divide its X and Z by 8. (Y stays the same.)
- Overworld base at X=800, Z=-400
- Nether coordinates: X=100, Z=-50
Build a portal at those Nether coordinates and it will link back to your base.
Linking two bases
- 1.At Base A, note your Overworld X and Z.
- 2.Divide both by 8 to get Nether coordinates.
- 3.Go to the Nether and build a portal at those coordinates.
- 4.Repeat for Base B.
- 5.Now a short Nether tunnel between the two portals connects bases that are thousands of blocks apart in the Overworld.
TipPortals link to the *nearest existing portal* within range first. If yours connects to the wrong place, the coordinates are usually off — double-check your division and build the destination portal manually.
Travel tips
- Build enclosed tunnels — ghasts and piglins make the open Nether dangerous.
- Wear gold armor pieces so piglins stay neutral.
- Bring a fire resistance potion and never carry gold openly near piglins if you want to avoid aggro.
