How to Find, Tame and Ride Horses
Horses are the fastest way to travel on land. Here's how to tame, saddle, armour and breed them.
A tamed horse is faster than sprinting and can leap fences — the best early-game travel upgrade.
Find a horse
Horses spawn in Plains and Savanna biomes, usually in herds. Donkeys and mules appear too (they're slower but can carry chests).
Tame it
- 1.Approach and mount the horse empty-handed (right-click).
- 2.It'll buck you off — just keep re-mounting.
- 3.After a few tries, hearts appear and it's tamed.
Feeding it apples, sugar or golden carrots first makes taming faster.
Saddle and ride
You can't craft a saddle — find one in dungeon, temple, or fishing loot, or buy from a leatherworker villager. With a saddle on, open the horse's inventory (mount, then press the inventory key) and place the saddle. Now you steer it directly.
Horse armour
Horses can wear leather, iron, gold or diamond horse armour (found in loot, not craftable except leather). It goes in the horse's armour slot and reduces damage.
Breeding
Feed two tamed horses a Golden Apple or Golden Carrot and they'll produce a foal that inherits a blend of their stats — breed your best to build a super-horse.
