How to Build a Nether Wart Farm
Soul sand only, no light, no water, and bone meal does nothing. Exact manual and piston-harvest layouts, plus how many plants keep a brewing stand fed.
One block of soul sand and one nether wart is the whole barrier between you and unlimited potions. Nether wart ignores every rule the Overworld taught you: no hoe, no farmland, no water, no light, no bone meal. It grows in a sealed windowless box as fast as in a fortress courtyard. Build the patch once, replant on a loop, and your brewing stand never runs dry.
What nether wart actually needs
The requirement list is one item long.
- Soul sand. Nether wart can only be planted on soul sand. Not soul soil, not netherrack, not sand, not farmland. This is the single most common reason a new farm "doesn't work".
- Nothing else. Light level is irrelevant — wart grows in pitch dark and full daylight at the same rate. There is no hydration mechanic, so water does nothing. There is no trampling, so jump on the patch all you like.
- A loaded chunk. Growth only happens while the chunk is loaded and ticking. A farm on the far side of the world grows nothing while you are away.
It also does not care which dimension it is in. Soul sand carried home through a portal works perfectly in an Overworld base. Building at home rather than in a fortress is usually the right call — no ghast fireballs, no wither skeletons in the rows, and your brewing stand is a few blocks away. How the growth actually works
Nether wart has four growth stages. Each random tick a planted wart gets, it has a 1 in 10 chance to advance one stage — which means growth is a slow random walk, not a timer.
The practical numbers: on default settings a fully mature plant takes a bit over half an hour of loaded time on average, but the variance is huge. Some plants in a row will finish in ten minutes and others in the same row will still be short after an hour. That is expected. Do not stand there watching one plant.
The important visual detail: the two middle stages use the same texture. A plant that looks "half grown" might be one tick from finishing or two whole stages away. The freshly planted stage is obvious and the mature stage is obvious — taller, darker red, with the fat bulbs down the stalk — and everything between those two is a single indistinguishable texture.
- A fully grown plant drops 2 to 4 nether wart, or up to 7 if you break it with a Fortune III tool.
- An immature plant drops exactly 1 — the one you planted, back again, with all the growing time wasted. Fortune does nothing for it.
Why bone meal does nothing
Bone meal only accelerates blocks that have explicit bone-meal behaviour coded into them, and nether wart is not one of them. Right-clicking a planted wart with bone meal consumes nothing and does nothing — no particles, no stage advance. There is no enchantment, no potion, no block, and no fuel that speeds up a single wart plant either.
That has one hard design consequence: you cannot make a nether wart farm faster, only bigger. Every other crop lets you trade bone meal for time — see composters and bone meal if you want that loop for wheat and melons — but wart growth speed is fixed, so throughput scales with how many soul sand blocks you own. Ninety plants produce three times what thirty produce.
The one yield lever that does exist is Fortune. Breaking a mature plant with a Fortune tool raises the top of the 2-to-4 roll by one per level, up to 7 with Fortune III. It does not touch growth time and it does nothing at all for a plant you broke early, so it is a bonus on a farm that is already the right size, not a substitute for one.
Getting soul sand and your first wart
Soul sand comes from the Nether. Soul sand valleys are wall-to-wall with it, so one shovel trip fills a shulker box; you will also find scattered patches in nether wastes. Any shovel works, Efficiency just makes it quicker, and no Silk Touch is needed — soul sand always drops itself.
Nether wart itself only comes from the Nether at first, and it grows in exactly two places. Fortresses have small walled soul sand gardens tucked beside the internal stairwells, twenty plants to a garden. Housing-unit bastion remnants have a handful — always exactly one, five or six plants — in the central courtyard. Fortress chests are a bonus rather than a plan: roughly one chest in five holds a small pile of three to seven wart, not the stack you are hoping for.
Take every plant you find, mature or not — an immature one still gives you one wart, and one wart is all you need to bootstrap, because every mature harvest returns two to four.
Fortresses are also where you get blaze rods for brewing fuel, so do both errands on the same trip.
The manual layout — build this first
This takes ten minutes and covers 95% of players' needs.
- 1.Pick a room at your base with a solid roof and floor, sized two blocks wider than the bed you want — a 9x9 room holds a 7x7 planting bed with a one-block walkway ring. Seal it. Nether mobs spawn at light level 7 or below, rather than the Overworld's stricter light-0 rule, so if you insist on building inside a fortress, a couple of torches will not keep wither skeletons out of your crops — a sealed room will.
- 2.Lay the bed with soul sand. A 7x7 bed is 49 plants; a 9x9 bed is 81. Leave the walkway ring as a normal block so you have somewhere to stand that is not slowing you down.
- 3.Right-click each soul sand block with nether wart. That is the entire planting step — no tilling, no watering.
- 4.Leave. Do something else in the same area so the chunk keeps ticking. Come back after a long mining trip.
- 5.Break only the tall bulbous plants, replant one wart into each empty block immediately, and bank the rest.
Two quality-of-life notes. Soul sand slows you and sinks you slightly, which makes walking a big patch tedious — Soul Speed boots fix that. The enchantment comes from piglin bartering or from bastion remnant chests, it cannot be rolled on an enchanting table, and it chews through boot durability as you walk, so put it on a pair you are happy to keep repairing. And because wart needs no air above it, you can stack layers on a two-block pitch: soul sand, wart, soul sand, wart. A four-layer stack quadruples output in the same footprint.
The piston-harvest layout
Nether wart breaks and drops as an item whenever a piston head or a pushed block enters its space, and also whenever the soul sand under it is moved or destroyed. That is the entire mechanic a redstone harvester exploits.
The simplest reliable build is one piston per plant:
- 1.Run rows of soul sand with a one-block gap between each pair of rows.
- 2.In the gap, at the same height as the wart, place a piston facing each plant. A regular piston is enough — the extending head alone destroys the wart, so you do not need a pusher block or sticky pistons.
- 3.Run the redstone line along the top of the piston row. Dust powers the mechanism block directly beneath it, so a single line laid over the pistons fires every one of them from a lever or button at the end. Do not run the line underneath the pistons — dust does not power the block above it, and that row will never move.
- 4.One pulse breaks every plant in the row and drops it in place.
Keep the trigger manual. Redstone cannot read "ripe". A comparator gets nothing useful out of a wart plant, and an observer aimed at one pulses on every stage change rather than only the last, so it happily fires the harvester at a plant that is one stage old. Wiring the harvester to a clock, a timer or a bare observer is the classic disaster: it breaks immature plants, each drops a single wart, and your farm silently converts itself into a break-even loop that never produces a surplus. Walk in, look at the rows, flip the lever when they are ready.
To scale past a few rows without placing hundreds of pistons, the advanced option is a slime-block flying machine that sweeps each row — the blocks it carries destroy every wart in their path, so one machine replaces one piston per plant. Bigger project; start with the lever.
Collecting the drops
Harvested wart lands on top of the soul sand, and a hopper underneath cannot reach it — hoppers only pull from the block space directly above themselves, and that space is full of soul sand.
The clean answer is a hopper minecart on a rail loop directly beneath the soul sand floor. Hopper minecarts pick up items sitting on the block above them, straight through that block, so a single loop under the rows sweeps the whole harvest. For a patch under about 60 plants, walking the row and grabbing the drops by hand takes seconds and costs nothing. Add the minecart when the farm outgrows your patience.
How much you need to sustain brewing
Work backwards from the brewing stand.
- One nether wart converts up to three water bottles into awkward potions in a single operation. So one wart equals three finished potions of whatever you brew on top of it.
- Fuel is never the constraint: one blaze powder powers 20 brewing operations.
- An unenchanted break on a mature plant averages three wart; one goes back in the ground, so net yield is roughly two wart per plant per cycle — about six potions per plant.
Run the numbers on a real patch. A 7x7 bed is 49 plants, so one harvest nets around 100 spare wart after replanting — roughly 300 potions, and more than that with a Fortune tool. That is more fire resistance, strength and healing than most worlds consume in months. Even a heavy brewer (splash healing for raids, stacks of fire resistance for netherite runs, regeneration for boss fights) is comfortable at 40 to 60 plants. Go past 100 only if you are stocking a server shop or crafting red nether bricks in bulk, which is the other thing wart is good for.
Once the supply is steady, the bottleneck moves to the secondary ingredients — ghast tears, magma cream, glistering melons. Plan those with the potion brewing guide, and use the brewing calculator to work out exactly how many awkward bases a given loadout needs before you start breaking rows.
The failure modes, ranked
- Soul soil instead of soul sand. Soul soil is the plain, smoother, browner block; soul sand has the faces in it. Wart refuses to plant on soul soil, and both generate side by side in soul sand valleys.
- Harvesting early. The two middle stages share a texture. If it is not tall with bulbs, leave it.
- Waiting for bone meal to work. It never will. Build a bigger patch instead.
- A clock-driven or observer-driven harvester. Both fire on immature plants, which drop one wart each and kill your surplus permanently. Keep the lever manual.
- Redstone dust run under the pistons. Dust powers downward into a mechanism, not upward. The line belongs on top of the piston row.
- A farm in an unloaded chunk. No ticks, no growth. Put it where you actually play.
- An open fortress room. Nether mobs still spawn at light level 7 or below, so torches alone will not stop them. Wither skeletons walk in, you take Wither, and your carefully planted rows become a fight. Wall it in or bring the soul sand home.
