How to Build a Tree Farm for Endless Wood

Wood is the one resource you never stop needing. Manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic tree farms compared.

Wood is the resource you never stop consuming — tools, sticks, scaffolding, fuel, building, and every crafting recipe that starts with planks. A tree farm keeps a chest full without ever walking into a forest again.

Pick the right tree

The species genuinely matters, because their shapes suit different designs:

  • Oak — small and predictable, and drops apples. Good for compact manual farms.
  • Birch — the most uniform. Always roughly the same height with no branches, which makes it the easiest to automate and the standard choice for simple farms.
  • Spruce — can be grown as 2x2 giant trees, which produce an enormous amount of wood per sapling. The best yield per unit of effort, and the usual pick for large farms.
  • Jungle — also grows 2x2 giants, very tall. High yield but awkward shapes.
  • Dark oakonly grows as 2x2. Reliable and compact for its output.
  • Acacia — irregular diagonal shapes. Attractive wood, but the worst to automate.

For a first farm, birch is the easiest. For maximum output, spruce 2x2 is the answer.

The manual farm — start here

The simplest useful version, and honestly the one most players keep:

  1. 1.Flat, lit platform with dirt or grass planting spots.
  2. 2.Space saplings out — trees need clearance to grow, both horizontally and vertically. Cramped spacing means saplings simply refuse to grow.
  3. 3.Plant, grow, chop, replant. Saplings drop from leaves, so the farm reseeds itself.
  4. 4.Bone meal speeds growth dramatically. A skeleton spawner farm supplies bones in quantity, which turns bone meal into a free accelerator.

With an Efficiency axe this is fast, and it needs no redstone at all. Our max enchantments tool shows what an axe can hold — Efficiency, Unbreaking and Mending together make a permanent tool.

Semi-automatic with TNT

A step up. Trees are grown in a row, then a TNT charge fells them all at once and water carries the drops to collection.

This trades gunpowder for time. If you have a creeper farm producing gunpowder in bulk, it is a reasonable trade — and it scales far better than chopping by hand.

Fully automatic farms

Fully automatic tree farms exist and work, typically using observers to detect a grown tree and pistons or TNT to break it, with dispensers replanting saplings and bone-mealing them.

They are considerably more complex than the other farms on this site, and honestly the payoff is smaller than it looks — a manual birch or spruce farm with an Efficiency axe already produces more wood than most players use. Build the automatic version because you want to, not because you need to.

TipA good middle path: grow 2x2 spruce manually with bone meal. A single giant spruce yields a very large amount of wood for one round of bone meal, and you need no redstone whatsoever.

Lighting is not optional

Tree farms are dark under the canopy, and leaves block light. That makes them excellent hostile mob spawn sites, which is not what you want in the middle of your base.

Light the floor thoroughly — under the canopy, not just around the edges. Lanterns or torches on the ground between trees, or glowstone in the floor itself. This is the most commonly skipped step and it is why some players find creepers in their tree farm.

What wood is for

  • Planks, sticks, tools — the foundation of everything.
  • Charcoal. Smelt logs to get charcoal, an early-game coal substitute. Though once you have a bamboo farm or a kelp farm, those are better fuels.
  • Scaffolding with bamboo and string.
  • Bookshelves — six planks and three books each, and you need 15 of them for a full enchanting setup.
  • Building. The main consumer for most players. Large builds eat wood at a rate that makes a farm essential.
  • Beehives, needed for a bee farm.

Apples and saplings

Oak and dark oak leaves drop apples, which matter more than they look — apples plus gold make golden apples, the best emergency healing in the game and essential for the Wither and the Ender Dragon.

If you want apples specifically, grow dark oak: it produces apples at a better rate than oak because of the sheer volume of leaves on a 2x2 tree.

Saplings always drop from leaves, so a tree farm never runs out of its own seed stock. Break leaves with shears to also collect the leaf blocks for building.
