The Perfect Enchanting Setup: Bookshelves, Lapis and Level 30

Exactly how many bookshelves you need, where to place them, and how to stop wasting levels on enchantments you did not want.

An enchanting table on its own offers weak enchantments. Surrounded correctly, it offers level 30 — where the best enchantments live. The setup is simple, but the placement rules are specific enough that a lot of people build it slightly wrong and never reach the top tier.

You need exactly 15 bookshelves

Fifteen. Not more — additional shelves do nothing at all. Fifteen bookshelves is the maximum enchanting power the table can use, and it is what unlocks level 30 offers.

Each bookshelf must be:

  • One block away from the table, with air between the shelf and the table. If you place shelves flush against the table, they do not count.
  • At the same height as the table, or one block above it. Both levels work.
  • Unobstructed. Any solid block in the gap between a shelf and the table blocks that shelf's contribution. This includes torches on the floor in the gap, carpets, and even a stray block you forgot to break.

The layout that works

The standard build is a 5x5 square with the enchanting table in the centre:

  • Leave the ring immediately around the table empty — that is the one-block air gap.
  • Place bookshelves around the outer edge of the 5x5, leaving the corner-adjacent gaps as needed.
  • You can split them between floor level and one block up; both count toward the same total.

The most reliable check is in-game rather than on paper: stand at the table and look at it. When the setup is correct, you will see enchanting glyphs floating from the shelves toward the table. If a shelf is not sending glyphs, something is blocking it. When the third slot offers level 30, you are done.

TipThe commonest mistake is lighting. A torch placed on the floor in the gap between shelf and table blocks that shelf. Light the room from above or outside the ring, or use light sources that do not occupy the gap.

What you need to enchant

Each attempt costs two things:

  • Experience levels. The number shown on the slot.
  • Lapis lazuli. One to three pieces depending on the slot.

Importantly, the level cost and the levels consumed are not the same. A level 30 enchant requires you to *be* level 30, but only consumes three levels. This is why getting to 30 and enchanting repeatedly is efficient — you do not drop back to zero each time.

Always use the highest slot

The top slot is cheap and weak. The bottom slot at level 30 is where multi-enchantment results come from — a diamond pickaxe from the level 30 slot often arrives with Efficiency IV, Unbreaking III and Fortune II together.

Enchanting a cheap item on the low slots to cycle the offers is a known technique, but the honest recommendation is simpler: get to level 30 and use slot three every time.

Our enchantment table calculator shows the level ranges each slot can produce for a given bookshelf count, so you can check whether your setup is actually delivering what it should before you spend anything.

What you cannot get from a table

Some of the best enchantments are treasure-only and never appear at an enchanting table:

  • Mending — the most important one. Repairs gear with XP.
  • Soul Speed
  • Swift Sneak
  • Frost Walker
  • Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing

These come from fishing, chest loot, or villager trading. For Mending specifically, trading is by far the most reliable route — our villager workstation guide explains how to reroll a Librarian until it appears.

Getting to level 30 repeatedly

Enchanting eats levels, so a steady XP source is the real bottleneck. In rough order of throughput:

  • [Enderman farm](/blog/enderman-farm-guide) — the fastest in the game by a wide margin.
  • [Mob grinder](/blog/how-to-build-a-mob-grinder) — slower but far easier to build early.
  • Mining — ores give XP directly, and you are getting the materials at the same time.
  • Smelting and breeding — modest but genuinely free if you already run farms.

Our XP calculator converts between levels and total experience, which is useful when you are deciding whether one more trip to the farm gets you to 30.

Plan before you spend

Enchanting is random within a range, so the efficient approach is to know what you are aiming for. Our max enchantments tool lists every enchantment each item can hold at maximum level — check it first, then decide whether to enchant at the table or hold out for books.

And once you have the books, combine them book-on-book before touching the tool. Our anvil and Mending guide explains why that ordering is the difference between a tool you can keep improving and one that permanently reads "Too Expensive!".

A practical build order

  1. 1.Get to a stable diamond supply so the gear is worth enchanting.
  2. 2.Build the table and all 15 shelves. Sugar cane and leather for the books adds up — a simple farm helps.
  3. 3.Set up a reliable XP source.
  4. 4.Get Mending from a Librarian before enchanting your main tools.
  5. 5.Enchant at slot three, combine books properly, and stop worrying about durability forever.
