How to Find Diamonds Fast (Best Y-Level & Method)
Branch mine at Y=-59, or -54 to stay above the lava layer, with an Iron Pickaxe or better. Fortune III averages 2.2 diamonds per ore.
Y=-59 is the lowest layer of clean rock. Diamond ore generates anywhere from Y=16 down to the bedrock floor and gets steadily more common the deeper you go, but bedrock is mixed into every layer from Y=-63 to Y=-60. Open the debug screen with F3; the Y value on the XYZ line is the layer your feet are in. Stand at -59 and a two-block-tall tunnel covers Y=-59 and Y=-58, the two layers where diamond ore is most common.
How much the exact Y-level matters
Most diamond ore is placed in a triangle-shaped spread that peaks at the bottom of the world. One extra batch is spread evenly from Y=-4 down. From the game's ore placement data, a two-block tunnel at each height passes roughly this much diamond ore compared with one at Y=-59:
| Feet at | Diamond ore vs Y=-59 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Y=-59 | 100% | Richest bedrock-free layer; caves here are full of lava |
| Y=-54 | about 95% | Lava lakes sit below your feet |
| Y=-32 | about 70–75% | Same slow deepslate, fewer diamonds |
| Y=-16 | about 55–60% | Just over half the ore for the same digging |
| Y=0 | about 16–17% | Above the even batch, which stops at Y=-4 |
| Y=11 | about 5% | The pre-1.18 advice; skip it |
When the world generates, lava replaces the air in every cave and ravine between Y=-55 and Y=-63. At -59, any cave your tunnel breaks into is likely to be full of lava. At -54 you walk above that layer and give up only about one diamond in twenty, which makes it the better level for a first trip. The best Y-level for every ore covers the other ores.
Branch mining step by step
- 1.Dig a staircase down, never a straight shaft. Breaking the block under your feet can drop you into a cave or a lava lake.
- 2.At your level, cut a main tunnel two blocks tall and one wide.
- 3.Every third block, dig a side branch to the left and right. That leaves two solid blocks between branches, so each of them touches a tunnel wall and you see almost every block in the layer.
- 4.When you find diamond ore, clear the blocks around it. Ore generates in veins, so one block often has neighbours.
- 5.Put torches on one wall only, so you always know which way leads back.
Leaving five blocks between branches covers more ground for the same digging but can miss some veins. Two is the thorough setting.
Caves versus strip mining
Exploring caves at the right depth finds more ore per minute and wears your pickaxe less. The game makes about 13 attempts to place a diamond vein in each chunk, though about half of the deep attempts aim below the bedrock floor and place nothing. Four of the 13 are buried veins that never place ore next to air. The rest have a 50% or 70% chance to skip each ore block that would touch air. A cave wall shows you only part of what's in the rock. A tunnel through solid deepslate finds the buried veins too.
Water and lava don't count as air. Diamond ore shows up more often on the walls of flooded caves and lava lakes, so scan them from a safe spot before you move on. The best routine combines both methods: branch mine, and when a branch breaks into a cave, light it and check its walls.
One rare bonus: in deserts, swamps and mangrove swamps, Bone Block fossils buried at Y=-8 or lower carry diamond ore in place of the coal that fossils above Y=0 hold.
Fortune, Silk Touch and the right pickaxe
Diamond ore needs an Iron Pickaxe or better. A Stone, Copper, Golden or Wooden Pickaxe breaks it and gets nothing. Each ore normally drops one diamond and 3–7 XP. Fortune raises the diamond count:
| Pickaxe | Diamonds per ore | Average |
|---|---|---|
| No Fortune | 1 | 1 |
| Fortune I | 1–2 | 1.33 |
| Fortune II | 1–3 | 1.75 |
| Fortune III | 1–4 | 2.2 |
If you have Silk Touch but not Fortune yet, use it on the ore. It drops the ore block itself and no XP. Place the blocks and break them once you have a Fortune III pickaxe; the bonus works on placed ore too. Smelting the ore gives only one diamond. Fortune and Silk Touch can't share a pickaxe, so keep two.
Deepslate takes twice as long to break as stone, and Deepslate Diamond Ore is harder than the stone version. Once you have an Enchanting Table, put Efficiency on your mining pickaxe before long deepslate trips.
Lava, sculk and other dangers
- Carry a Water Bucket. Water flowing onto a lava source turns it into Obsidian; onto flowing lava it makes Cobblestone. Pour it over lava in your path, or at your feet if you catch fire.
- Lava is slow. In the Overworld it spreads 3 blocks sideways from a source, one block every 1.5 seconds. When you open a flow, place a block in the gap before it reaches you.
- Stop at sculk. Sculk means you have reached the Deep Dark, where Sculk Shriekers can summon the Warden. Read the Deep Dark survival guide before you mine through one.
Chests that hold diamonds
Chests are a second source. The table lists the best, with the chance that one chest holds at least one diamond. Fortresses and bastions are in the Nether and End cities in the End; the rest are in the Overworld.
| Chest | Chance of a diamond | Diamonds each time they roll |
|---|---|---|
| Buried treasure | 53% | 1–2 |
| Abandoned camp secret chest (since 26.3) | 36% | 1 |
| Trial chamber corridor-end chest | 21% | 1–2 |
| End city | 20% | 2–7 |
| Nether fortress | 18% | 1–3 |
| Village weaponsmith | 14% | 1–3 |
| Shipwreck treasure | 14% | 1 |
| Bastion treasure | 13% | 2–6 |
| Jungle temple | 13% | 1–3 |
| Village toolsmith | 10% | 1–3 |
| Abandoned mineshaft | 9% | 1–2 |
Buried treasure is the best early target. Every buried treasure chest also holds a Heart of the Sea, and Buried Treasure Maps come from shipwreck map chests and ocean ruin chests. The seed map marks where shipwrecks, ocean ruins, villages and abandoned camps can generate on your seed. It doesn't check biomes yet, so a marker only holds a structure if the biome there suits it.
About 2 abandoned camps in 5 hide a rarer chest with better loot: an Oxidized Copper Chest, often buried under other blocks. The abandoned camps guide shows where to look.
What to spend your first diamonds on
- 1.A Diamond Pickaxe for 3 diamonds. Obsidian and Ancient Debris need a Diamond Pickaxe or better.
- 2.An Enchanting Table for 2 diamonds, 4 Obsidian and a book. With 15 bookshelves around it, about one bottom-slot offer in five for a Diamond Pickaxe includes Fortune III.
- 3.Diamond armour: 24 diamonds for the full set of helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots.
Keep at least 7 spare: copying a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template takes 7 diamonds, 1 Netherrack and the template itself. The netherite guide is the next step once your diamond gear is ready.
