Best Free Shaders for Low-End PCs in 2026
On integrated graphics or an older graphics card, try E-LITE, Mellow or MakeUp Ultra Fast. All three are free and download directly from MineSpecs.
Those three come from the two lightest tiers in the MineSpecs shader catalogue. For almost every pack in those tiers, the rating comes from the tags its author set on Modrinth when MineSpecs added it, not from a benchmark MineSpecs ran. Many authors tag more than one tier, and the catalogue shows one of them. Treat the rating as a starting point for your hardware, not a promise of a frame rate.

Two ratings sit above these. Medium wants a mid-range dedicated GPU, and High is a showcase tier that you should not expect to run on weak hardware.
If your PC has no separate graphics card, your list is the Potato-tier shaders. If it has a card that is a few years old, start with the Low-impact shaders instead.
Plenty of packs on both pages are single effects rather than a new look: horror filters, retro scanlines, black-and-white modes. The picks below are the ones that make the ordinary game look better.

Potato tier: integrated graphics and old laptops
E-LITE Shaders
E-LITE, by Entokito, is an edit of MakeUp — Ultra Fast. Its author says the aim is to make MakeUp "fancier while maintaining great performance". Its feature list, much of it shared with MakeUp, includes coloured shadows, bloom, motion blur and reflections on blocks and water, and most of these can be turned off or reduced. What E-LITE adds is mainly customisation: a Style button that switches between an enhanced and a vanilla look, and extra colour schemes. Its author tags it Potato on Modrinth, and the catalogue lists it as Potato. The profiles run from Minimum, which the author calls the pure shader, through Very low up to MAX, and the author recommends Medium. Because its author made it fancier than MakeUp, do not assume it is the lighter of the two. If it struggles, pick a lower profile or fall back to MakeUp itself.
Mellow
Mellow, by TheCMK, has a painterly look built for actually playing: vivid colour, adjustable fog and several colour schemes, with visibility close to vanilla. It has more Modrinth downloads than any other Potato-tier pack in the catalogue. Pick it if you want a stylised look rather than a realistic one.
Low tier: an older graphics card
MakeUp — Ultra Fast
KDXavier's MakeUp — Ultra Fast is the most downloaded pack that MineSpecs hosts itself. It adds shadows, waving foliage and water reflections, and its author built it for the best balance of quality and performance. Every effect is optional. The author names shadows and depth of field as the costly ones, so turn those off first if you need more frames. The catalogue lists it as Low, but its author tags it Potato as well, so it suits integrated graphics too. It runs on Iris or OptiFine, so it works with whichever loader you already have.
BSL Shaders
CaptTatsu's BSL is the most downloaded Low-tier pack in the catalogue, known for golden sunsets and a soft bloom over everything. It adds shadows and reflections too, and runs on Iris or OptiFine. Its author tags it Low on Modrinth as well.
Sildur's Vibrant Shaders
Sildur's ships as separate preset downloads (Lite, Medium, High, High-Motionblur, Extreme and Extreme-Volumetric lighting), so you choose your quality level before you download. Sildur labelled Lite "for Intel cards and weak systems" on older releases, and says Medium or High should work fine on a GTX 960. Start on Lite and move up only if it runs comfortably. Sildur tags the pack every tier from Potato to High on Modrinth; the single Low rating on MineSpecs is the site's own.
Direct download or the author's page
Whether a pack downloads from MineSpecs depends on its licence, not its quality. Both kinds are free.
- Hosted packs. E-LITE, Mellow and MakeUp use licences that allow redistribution (MIT or LGPL). MineSpecs mirrors the .zip, so the button on the pack's page gives you the file directly, with no ad gate or redirect, and the page shows the exact version you get.
- Linked packs. BSL and Sildur's Vibrant are All Rights Reserved, which forbids re-hosting. The button on their pages sends you to the author's own page instead, where the newest build lives. Sildur's download links pass through an ad link on the way to CurseForge or Modrinth.
Smoother edges without a new look
If jagged edges are what bother you, a full shader is more than you need. Anti Aliasing (TAA, FXAA) by LoLip_p is a hosted Potato-tier pack that keeps the vanilla look and smooths edges in one of two modes: FXAA, which is faster, or TAA, which its author calls more accurate.
VanillAA, a popular anti-aliasing pack, only lists support for four versions between 1.18.2 and 1.20.1 and has not been updated since 2023. On anything newer, use Anti Aliasing (TAA, FXAA) instead.
Mistakes that make a light pack feel heavy
- Starting too high. Medium packs are rated for a mid-range dedicated GPU, not integrated graphics. Start on the tier your hardware matches, Potato with integrated graphics and Low with an older card, and move up only when your frame rate holds.
- Leaving Render Distance where it was. More chunks on screen means more terrain for the shader to light and shadow. The FPS guide covers which Video Settings to lower first, and how to check a laptop is using its dedicated graphics chip rather than the integrated one.
- Using the wrong loader. A few packs run on only one loader, mostly Iris (a couple are OptiFine-only). Each pack's page names the loader it needs.
- Using the wrong version. Your Iris or OptiFine build must match your Minecraft version. Each pack's page also lists the Minecraft versions the hosted file supports, and that file can trail the author's newest release. If your version is missing, follow the Original project link on the pack's page to see whether the author has a newer build.
- Unzipping the download. A shader pack for Iris or OptiFine goes into the
shaderpacksfolder as a .zip. A few packs on the tier pages install as resource packs instead, and their page tells you so. - Judging a pack on its default settings. Most packs have their own settings screen with lighter presets. The shader install guide lists the settings that cost the most frames, such as shadow distance and reflections.
