How to Build in Medieval Style
Timber framing over a stone base, jettied storeys and roofs at 2:1 pitch — the rules that make a Minecraft build read medieval.
A medieval build reads as medieval from fifty blocks away, long before anyone can see a flower pot. Three things do that work: a dark heavy base, a pale timber-framed middle, and a roof steeper than anything a modern architect would sign off. Everything else is decoration hung on those three bands. Get the bands right and a plain box belongs on a fourteenth-century street. Get them wrong and no amount of detailing rescues it.
Band one: the stone base
Timber touching wet ground rots, so every framed building in history sits on stone. In Minecraft that means a plinth of one to three blocks of stone under every timber wall — and the fact that its height varies is the whole point, because it follows the ground instead of flattening it.
Never build that plinth from a single block. A mix that works in any biome:
- 6 parts cobblestone — the base texture
- 3 parts stone bricks — sharper, used at corners and around the doorway where dressed stone would go
- 1 part andesite or cobbled deepslate — cool grey noise
- 1 part mossy cobblestone and mossy stone bricks — only at ground level, thinning out as the wall rises
Place mossy blocks low and in clumps of two or three. Moss creeps up from damp ground; it does not polka-dot a wall evenly.
On a slope, cut the plinth into the hill rather than levelling the hill. If the ground drops two blocks along the length of the house, make the stone one block high at the top end and three at the bottom, and keep the timber sill beam above it dead level. Level timber over uneven stone sells terrain integration better than any amount of landscaping.
Band two: the timber cage
Timber framing is a grid you build first and then fill in, not a pattern you sprinkle over a finished wall.
Use stripped logs for the timbers, never planks. Stripped spruce, stripped dark oak and stripped oak all read as beams because the grain runs along the block; planks read as flooring. Stripped pale oak, added in 1.21.4, is the one to reach for if you want near-white limewashed timber instead of dark.
Mind the axis, because it is what most frames get wrong. A log takes its direction from the face you place it against: click the top or bottom face of a block and you get a vertical post, click a side face and you get a horizontal beam. Place a sill beam carelessly and it shows end-grain rings along the wall instead of running grain. Where the end grain is going to be on show anyway — a beam poking out of a gable, a post you look down on from a balcony — use the six-sided stripped wood blocks (stripped spruce wood, stripped dark oak wood, four logs in a two-by-two), which carry grain on all six faces. Plain spruce wood and dark oak wood are the opposite: bark on all six faces, no grain anywhere, which is for rough posts and tree trunks, not dressed timber.
Frame one storey like this:
- 1.Corner posts. A full column of stripped log at each corner, sill to wall plate.
- 2.A sill beam. One continuous course of stripped log sitting directly on the stone, all the way round, every block placed against a side face so the grain runs horizontally.
- 3.Studs every four blocks. Measure post centre to post centre. You get a repeating unit of one timber and three infill, and that four-block rhythm then governs your windows for free.
- 4.A wall plate. A second continuous course of stripped log at the top of the storey, laid the same way as the sill.
- 5.Braces. In each three-wide panel, put a stair in the top-left and top-right corner with the sloped face running down towards the middle of the panel. Two blocks per panel turns a plain rectangle into a braced frame.
For the infill, mix again. Base the panel on white terracotta, swap roughly one block in four for bone block, and one in eight for diorite. Bone block has vertical grain that reads as daub over wattle and stops the panel going dead flat. For a poorer building, use packed mud with mud bricks at the panel edges. For a rich one, work in smooth quartz or calcite — but only as a minority, because a whole wall of quartz reads far too clean and bright next to timber; plaster never looked like that.
Storey heights matter more than most people expect. Give the ground storey four blocks of wall between sill beam and wall plate, and the upper storey three. Medieval interiors were low and dark. A five-block ground floor already reads as a Victorian bank.
Band three: roofs, steeper than you think
Forty-five degrees is the shallowest pitch you should ever use, and it should be the exception. The default for this style is 2:1 — two blocks up for every one block in.
Build it from the eaves inward: place a full block, put a stair on top of it, step in one block, and repeat. Each course gains two blocks of height instead of one.
The difference is enormous. On a house nine blocks deep, a 45-degree roof rises four blocks to the ridge. A 2:1 roof rises eight — taller than the storey underneath it, which is exactly right.
Four rules that make roofs work:
- Build to an odd depth. Seven, nine or eleven, so the roof closes on a clean one-block ridge. An even depth leaves a two-wide flat top you then have to fudge with slabs.
- Overhang the walls. Run the roof one block past the wall on the eaves sides and two on the gable ends, then close the underside with upside-down stairs so the edge reads thick. A roof flush with the wall is the single most common thing that makes a build look like a first attempt.
- Back the skin. Stairs are not full blocks. A single skin leaves the stepped underside on show from inside the attic and from any ground higher than the eaves, and it lets daylight straight through the joints. Add a second layer behind it: full blocks if you want the attic properly sealed and dark, slabs if you only care how it looks, because slabs and stairs both let light through and neither will black the roof out.
- Mix the material. Dark oak stairs with roughly one in five swapped for spruce stairs, run in vertical streaks rather than scattered. For slate, deepslate tile stairs broken up with cobbled deepslate stairs. For a cooler grey, tuff brick stairs with polished tuff stairs. For a church or guild hall, cut copper stairs left to weather — copper and oxidation explains how to stop it at the stage you want with honeycomb.
Break a long roof with a chimney and one or two dormers. A chimney is a two-by-two stack of bricks or cobblestone carried at least two blocks clear of the ridge, and three or four on a big roof — a stack that stops level with the tiles disappears from every viewing angle. Cap it with brick slabs and a fence, or neck the top course down to a single block and stand one lit campfire on that. One campfire covers one block, so a full two-by-two top needs four of them; the single-block neck is tidier. Put a hay bale in the block directly beneath the campfire and it becomes a signal fire, and the smoke column rises far higher. A dormer is a three-wide, two-tall box pushed out of the roof face with its own little gable at the same pitch, and it must sit directly above a window on the wall below, never floating between two.
The gable end is the best surface in the whole build. Frame it with timbers following the roof line, infill the triangle, put a copper grate in as a vent, and stick a hoist beam out of the apex: one stripped log poking out two blocks, a chain hanging from its underside, a lantern on the bottom of the chain.
Jettied upper storeys
The jetty — an upper storey overhanging the one below — is the most recognisable medieval move there is, and it takes four steps.
- 1.Build the ground storey walls normally.
- 2.On the storey above, move the wall out one block on the street-facing side only.
- 3.Under the overhang, run upside-down stairs matching the timber along the whole length, so the underside of the jetty reads as a moulded edge rather than a raw block face.
- 4.Every four blocks, aligned with the posts below, swap one of those stairs for a fence post with a trapdoor beneath it, or a full log corbel poking out.
Jetty the front only. Overhanging all four sides makes the building look like a mushroom, and the real thing existed to steal floor area over a public street. If you add a third storey, jetty it again: the top is then two blocks wider than the base and the wall visibly leans out over the road.
In a town, jetty every house on the street side, keep the backs flush, and vary the storey heights by a block between neighbours so the eaves line steps up and down. That mismatch is what makes a street look built over two hundred years instead of one afternoon.
Windows in a rhythm
Windows go in the panels, never through the timbers. The four-block frame rhythm places them for you.
On a thirteen-block wall with posts at columns 1, 5, 9 and 13, the infill panels are columns 2 to 4, 6 to 8 and 10 to 12 — so your panel centres are 3, 7 and 11. Then:
- Upper storey: one window per panel, one wide and two tall, glass panes, in the centre column of the panel.
- Ground storey: glaze the full three-wide panel two blocks tall, then put the centre column back as a solid mullion — a stripped log, or a fence post. You end up with two one-wide, two-tall lights either side of a post, which is what a real mullioned window is. Do not try to centre a two-wide opening in a three-wide panel: it cannot be centred without touching a stud, and a two-wide opening has no middle column to take a mullion at all.
- Door: a single door in the centre panel, or one block off centre if you want the building to feel hand-built.
Dress every window rather than cutting a hole and walking away: an upside-down stair or a top-half slab as a sill poking out one block, a stripped log or a stair as a lintel above, and wooden trapdoors either side, placed on the wall and opened so they stand flat against it as shutters.
Never use full glass blocks. Panes sit back into the wall and catch the frame around them; glass blocks sit flush and read as a curtain wall. Keep the total small — if more than about a quarter of a wall is glass, it stopped being medieval. Grey and brown stained glass panes with the odd clear one read as leaded glazing. For a church, dot in red, blue and yellow panes at no more than one in five, or it turns into a fairground.
Irregular plan shapes
The fastest way to make a building look modern is to make it one rectangle. Medieval buildings grew instead.
- Draw the footprint as two or three overlapping rectangles — a 9x7 main block with a 5x5 wing pushed out two blocks is the standard move.
- Give every mass its own roof at the same pitch. Constant pitch, varying mass. That one rule does more than anything else on this list.
- Make one wing a storey taller than the rest.
- Offset the door from centre by a block, and put the chimney on one side rather than the middle.
- Do not flatten the ground. Lay roads from dirt path blocks, gravel and mixed stone slabs, let them wander, and let buildings sit at slightly different levels along them. Lay the paths last — placing any solid block on top of a dirt path turns it straight back into dirt.
Round towers are the one part of the style you should not eyeball. Feed the diameter into the circle generator and copy the ring straight off it — a nine or eleven diameter turret with a conical roof is the standard gatehouse corner.
Lighting it without ruining it
- Lanterns on chains. A lantern is light level 15 and the chain buys you the height. Chains stack as far as you need; aim at the underside of the lowest one to hang the lantern off it.
- A campfire in a stone hearth for the main room — also light 15, and it damages anything standing in it, so keep it out of a walkway. A soul campfire is light 10 if you want the hearth dimmer.
- Candles on tables and shelves — up to four per block, each one worth three levels: one candle is light 3, two is 6, three is 9, four is 12. Placed candles start unlit, so light them with flint and steel.
- Soul lanterns at light 10 where you want it dimmer and colder: a crypt, a cellar, a gaol.
Avoid glowstone, sea lanterns and redstone lamps entirely. They are flat, bright and unmistakably modern. Swapping them out costs you nothing in raw brightness — a lantern and a campfire are light 15 as well — but it does break your lighting into many small sources instead of a few big ones, so you have to plan the coverage rather than assume a room that looks lit is safe. In current Java a hostile mob needs block light 0 to spawn, so one genuinely dark block behind a barrel or under the stairs is all it takes — base lighting and mob-proofing covers the checks.
What breaks the illusion
- Concrete and quartz in bulk. Both are almost noiseless textures. Used as a whole wall they look printed.
- Flat or shallow roofs. Anything under 45 degrees, or a flat roof of any kind, kills the silhouette on its own.
- Oversized glazing. Three-wide picture windows and glass block walls.
- Perfect symmetry. Aim for almost symmetric: door off centre, chimney to one side, one wing taller.
- Flush eaves. No overhang, no shadow line, no roof.
- One-block walls. An entire elevation of plain cobblestone or plain planks with no mix.
- Modern lighting. Glowstone ceilings, sea lanterns underfoot.
- Iron doors and iron bars on a house. Fine on a castle gate or a gaol window, wrong on a cottage.
- Straight, level roads and flat ground.
- Scale. A medieval house is seven to nine blocks deep and nine to thirteen long. Grow it by adding wings, never by scaling the box up. A 20x20 cottage reads as a barn.
- Long dead-level fence railings. Break them with posts, use walls in stone contexts and trapdoors laid flat in wooden ones.
Palette and supply
Cap yourself at three material families plus one accent: a stone family, a timber family, an infill family, and then copper or a single deep colour in banners and wool. More than that and the build turns into a sample board.
A banner over the door or hanging from an upper window does more for character than another twenty blocks of trim, and the banner designer lets you work out the pattern stack before you spend the dye. All of this eats wood — a single townhouse swallows several stacks of stripped logs once you count the frame, the floors and the roof — so it is worth having a tree farm running before you commit to a village.
