What you need

• Coal×1
• Stick×1

Worth knowing

• Coal on top of a stick makes four torches; charcoal works exactly the same as coal here.
• Fits the 2x2 inventory grid, so you can make light without a crafting table.
• A torch gives light level 14, and in current Java versions hostile mobs need block light 0 to spawn, so anywhere the torchlight reaches is spawn-proof.
• The shape matters but its position does not — this works in any corner of the grid, as long as the arrangement is the same.
