The Best Food in Minecraft, Ranked
Not all food is equal. Here's what actually keeps your hunger bar full the longest.
Food restores two things: hunger (the drumsticks) and saturation (a hidden bar that keeps hunger from dropping). The best foods are high in saturation, so you eat less often.
The best everyday foods
- Golden Carrot — the single best food for saturation. Craft from a carrot surrounded by 8 gold nuggets. Ideal for long trips and combat.
- Cooked Steak / Cooked Porkchop — restore 8 hunger with great saturation. Easy from cows and pigs.
- Cooked Mutton / Cooked Chicken / Cooked Salmon — solid, easy to farm.
Easy early-game foods
- Bread — cheap and stackable from wheat.
- Baked Potato — grows fast and cooks easily.
- Carrots — plant, harvest, eat; also feed your farm animals.
Special foods
- Golden Apple — Absorption + Regeneration for a few seconds; great before a fight.
- Enchanted Golden Apple — much stronger buffs (found in loot); save for boss fights.
- Suspicious Stew — grants a short status effect based on the flower used.
TipAvoid raw meat and rotten flesh — raw food gives little saturation, and rotten flesh can make you hungry.
The pro move
Keep a stack of golden carrots or cooked steak on your hotbar. High saturation means you rarely need to eat, so you can heal (which drains hunger) without starving. Set up an animal farm for an endless meat supply.
