Which items take Fortune

The table offers an enchantment only on its primary items; an anvil can add it to anything that can hold it. See every enchantment an item can hold in the max enchantments by item tool.

Conflicts

Fortune can’t share an item with Silk Touch. An anvil refuses the combination, and the table never offers them together.

Enchanting table odds

Chance that one offer in the bottom slot (level 30, 15 bookshelves) includes Fortune, on a diamond pickaxe and on a book.

Power window per level

A table roll picks the highest level whose window contains the roll’s modified enchantment level. These are the registry’s min_cost and max_cost, not the level cost shown on the table.

Anvil cost

An anvil charges ×4 per level when Fortune comes from another item and ×2 per level when it comes from a book, so adding Fortune III from a book costs 6 levels before any prior-work penalty. Work out a full combine in the anvil cost calculator.

Command

Hold the item in your main hand and run this with cheats on. /enchant refuses an item that can’t hold Fortune and any level above III.
