Minecraft Protection enchantment
Protection cuts almost every kind of incoming damage. Each level adds 1 point to your armour's protection total, and the game caps that total at 20 points, an 80% reduction.

Which items take Protection
Helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots, and books.
None beyond the table items.

Conflicts
Protection can’t share an item with Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection. An anvil refuses the combination, and the table never offers them together.

Power window per level
A table roll picks the highest level whose window contains the roll’s modified enchantment level. These are the registry’s min_cost and max_cost, not the level cost shown on the table.

Anvil cost
An anvil charges ×1 per level when Protection comes from another item and ×1 per level when it comes from a book, so adding Protection IV from a book costs 4 levels before any prior-work penalty. Work out a full combine in the anvil cost calculator.

Hold the item in your main hand and run this with cheats on. /enchant refuses an item that can’t hold Protection and any level above IV.
