How to Breed and Tame Every Animal in Minecraft
A quick reference for what every animal eats, how to breed them, and how to tame dogs, cats, horses and more.
Animals give you a renewable supply of food, leather, wool and more. Here's how to breed and tame them all.
Breeding basics
Feed two adult animals their favourite food and hearts appear — they produce a baby, then need a short cooldown before breeding again.
What each animal eats
- Cows, sheep, goats: wheat
- Pigs: carrots, potatoes or beetroot
- Chickens: any seeds
- Rabbits: carrots or dandelions
- Wolves: any meat
- Cats & ocelots: raw cod or salmon
- Horses & donkeys: golden apples or golden carrots
- Foxes: sweet berries
- Bees: any flower
- Pandas: bamboo (with bamboo growing nearby)
- Axolotls: a bucket of tropical fish
Taming
- Wolf → Dog: feed bones until hearts appear.
- Cat: crouch, approach slowly, and feed raw cod or salmon.
- Horse / Donkey: mount it empty-handed over and over until it stops bucking you off, then add a saddle.
- Parrot: feed seeds.
- Llama: mount repeatedly like a horse.
TipFence off a pen and keep a breeding pair of each — you'll never run short of meat, wool, or leather again.
Baby animals grow up in about 20 minutes; feeding them their food speeds it along.
