Automatic Sugar Cane Farm
Twelve columns of sugar cane, sheared by pistons the instant they reach full height, washed east down a shallow stream and posted into a chest you empty once a week. Cane is paper, paper is books, books are bookshelves and an enchanting table, and the same stalks keep the rocket habit fed once you have gunpowder. The whole machine is eleven blocks long, costs two buckets of water, six pistons and six observers per row, and needs nothing from you once the water is in.
What you need
| Block | Count |
|---|---|
| Sandstone | 273 |
| Stone bricks | 72 |
| Sandstone slab | 68 |
| Smooth stone | 40 |
| Green wool | 36 |
| Sand | 16 |
| Piston | 12 |
| Observer | 12 |
| Hopper | 9 |
| Water | 8 |
| Cut copper | 8 |
| Lantern | 4 |
| Sea lantern | 3 |
| Dropper | 1 |
Counts are exact for the model above. Mine a little spare — nobody places every block first time.
Building it
Each stage names the layers it covers. Drag the slider on the model to that layer and you are looking at exactly what the stage describes.
1.Deck, sand rows and the water trench
Lay a sandstone pad eleven by nine, two courses deep, then a third deck course at y=2 so the working level sits above the ground. Cut the farm into that deck: sand from x=1 to x=8 at z=3 and again at z=5, with a one-block trench between them at z=4. Fill the trench with water — one source at each end is enough, since water spreads seven blocks and the trench is eight long. Every sand block now touches water orthogonally at its own level, which is the only condition sugar cane cares about. The trench is sealed on all six sides once the walkway goes on, so it will never drain.
2.Cane, the sweep stream and the hoppers
Plant cane at x=2 to x=7 in both rows; the schematic paints it as green wool, having no cane block. Cap the trench at z=4 with smooth stone — that walkway is what stops the collection stream pouring into it. Now one water source at the west end of each row, (1,3,3) and (1,3,5). Each runs seven blocks east over the cane bases, and cane is one of the few plants flowing water will not break. The stream ends exactly on a hopper at x=8, which points east into a second hopper at x=9; both x=9 hoppers point inward to the chest at (9,3,4) — oak planks in the render, a double chest in the world.
3.The piston row and the power bus
Pistons go behind the cane, not beside it: x=2 to x=7 at z=2 facing south into row A, and the same run at z=6 facing north into row B. They sit level with the second cane block, so when they fire they shear the stalk at block two and the block above it drops with it — two canes a column, the rooted base untouched. Behind each piston row, at the same height, lay a solid line of smooth stone at z=1 and z=7. That line is the power bus; it carries nothing yet, but every piston back is touching it.
4.Observers and the redstone line
An observer sits directly on top of each piston — z=2 facing south, z=6 facing north — staring at the space the third cane block will grow into. Behind them, at their own level, run redstone dust along the top of the smooth stone bus at (x,5,1) and (x,5,7); that slot is deliberately left empty in the schematic. Each observer's output face points straight into the dust. Lit dust weakly powers the block it rests on, and that block is flush against the back of every piston in the row, so one stalk reaching full height harvests the whole row at once. Expect a second, harmless pulse a tick later: the observer reports the cane vanishing as well as appearing.
5.Slabs, cornice and lights
Slab over anything a mob could stand on: the outer walkways at z=0 and z=8, the ends at x=0, x=9 and x=10, the two gaps at x=1 and x=8 beside each piston row, and a cornice at y=6 above the observers and above the redstone slot. Half a block of headroom is not enough to spawn in, and bottom slabs will not take a spawn themselves. Two sea lanterns set flush into the centre walkway light the middle strip; copper posts and lanterns finish the four corners. Leave (9,4,3) through (9,4,5) open so the chest lid has room to swing.
Make it yours
- Bone meal does nothing to sugar cane. Growth is pure random tick, so plan on a stalk gaining a block every eighteen minutes or so — twelve columns is a steady trickle, and if you want paper by the stack you mirror the whole module along z rather than making the rows longer.
- Keep every collection stream to seven blocks or shorter. Lengthen the rows and you must add a second water source and a second hopper, because items that stall on dry sand at the far end simply sit there until they despawn.
- The farm only ticks while its chunk is loaded, so it is not AFK-safe by itself. Build it inside your base's render distance, or park it in the spawn chunks if you want it filling the chest while you are off exploring.
- Sugar cane needs no light to grow — the lanterns here are purely spawn control. Skip them and the flat service floor behind the pistons becomes the darkest, most convenient creeper platform on your property.
- Hoppers feed only the container they point into. Crouch and aim at the next hopper as you place each one, or you will end up with a neat line pointing straight down into the deck and a chest that never fills.
