Nether Fortress Outpost

Every Nether trip ends the same way — you die somewhere between the portal and the fortress, and everything you were carrying is now sitting on a ledge above lava. This is the fix: a proper garrison. A nether brick keep on a netherrack shoulder, a blackstone gatehouse you can hold, a covered walkway on a single pier crossing a glowing chasm, and a watchtower on the far side keeping an eye on the wastes. Inside it is crimson planks and shroomlight, which after an hour of red fog feels almost civilised. It reads as a fortress from every angle because nothing on it is a flat wall.

Building it

Each stage names the layers it covers. Drag the slider on the model to that layer and you are looking at exactly what the stage describes.

1.Carve the outcrop and the chasm

Layers 1–6

Start with the rock, not the walls. Lay netherrack across the whole footprint two blocks deep, then a second layer inset by one so the ground already steps. Knock the corners off that upper layer — an outcrop with square corners looks like a table. The keep sits on a shelf at y3; the far side climbs in three stages to y5 so the watchtower stands higher than the keep's ground floor. Then cut the gap between them: clear x12 to x14 straight down and floor it with magma. That chasm does all the work later — the bridge is only interesting because there is something underneath it. Crimson nylium on the north shelf and a magma vein along the south edge stop the netherrack reading as one flat red mass.

2.Raise the keep shell

Layers 4–10

One hollow nether brick box from y3 to y16 gives you floor, four walls and a ceiling in a single move; clear the middle out afterwards and you have an eleven by eleven shell with six blocks of headroom downstairs. Cap the floor with polished blackstone and lay crimson planks over the middle of it — the dark border reads as a stone edge to a timber floor. Swap the bottom course of every wall for plain blackstone. It is one course, it costs nothing, and it stops the wall meeting the rock in a single flat material. Arrow slits go at y6 and y7, two tall and one wide, set well away from the corners so the corner masonry stays unbroken. Two per wall is plenty — a fortress with a slit every three blocks looks like a colander.

3.Gatehouse, buttress and the working floor

Layers 4–11

The south wall gets a gatehouse projecting two blocks out, five wide and six tall in polished blackstone brick, and you cut the passage through it and the wall behind in one operation. Because the projection is deeper than the doorway you get a real tunnel with shadow in it. Two machicolation holes punched at y8 look down on whatever is standing at the door, and shroomlight either side lights the approach. On the west face a single narrow buttress steps out to x0, tying the keep back into the rock. Inside: furnaces and a crafting table against the north wall, a soul sand plot in the south-east corner with a crimson slab kerb for wart, and shroomlight let into the masonry at y8 rather than hung from the ceiling — light coming out of the walls is what sells a nether build.

4.Upper storey and the string course

Layers 11–16

Run polished blackstone right across at y10. Inside it becomes the upper floor; where it crosses the walls it becomes a band that splits the elevation into two storeys, which is the cheapest way there is to stop an eleven-block wall looking like a wall. Crimson planks over the middle again, with a two by two hole left for your stair. Then corbel a ring of polished blackstone slabs one block outside the wall on the same level — it projects, it catches the glow from below, and it costs four lines. Upstairs the openings change character: five-wide windows north and south with a blackstone mullion down the centre and a polished sill, narrow slits east and west. Wide windows where you want a view, slits where you expect trouble.

5.The covered walkway

Layers 11–15

Deck it at y10 in polished blackstone, three wide with the walking strip down the middle. The side walls are only three courses — head clearance and nothing more — with a single slit punched in the centre of each. Cap it with a full nether brick course along both parapets and nether brick slabs between them, so the roof sits lower than its own edges and reads as a covered rampart rather than a corridor. One shroomlight in the ceiling is enough; you want the bridge glowing from inside when you look back at it from the outcrop. Underneath, a blackstone footing on the chasm floor carries a single blade pier up to the deck. Without it the span floats. With it, the whole bridge has a reason to exist.

6.The watchtower

Layers 7–17

Same trick as the keep: one hollow box from y6 to y16, hollowed out, with a polished blackstone floor at y10 that doubles as the band on the outside. The lower room only needs three blocks of headroom — it is a store, not a hall. The upper room is where the walkway lands, so the door is cut at y11 and y12 in the west wall and you step straight off the deck onto the floor with no drop. Slits at y8 on three faces, taller windows at y13 and y14 directly above them so the elevation lines up, and a shroomlight set into the west wall lights the lower room without a single torch. Because it stands on the higher shelf it clears the keep's shoulder, which is the entire point of a watchtower.

7.Roofs, eaves and battlements

Layers 16–19

Draw the eaves as one layer at y15: nether brick wall course, shroomlight let in at the quarter points, and a projecting ring of polished blackstone slabs outside it. That overhang is what gives the roof deck above something to sit on. Both roofs go down as polished blackstone oversailing the wall by a block, with a nether brick walking surface in the middle so the deck is not one flat colour, and a hatch left open over each stair. Battlements are a second layer at y17 — merlons on every other block, gilded blackstone at the four corners so the highlight lands where the eye already goes. Finally run the corner pilasters up to y18 as stubby turrets, and set a magma block with a shroomlight on top of the watchtower as a signal fire.
